I sorta like the artwork. I'm still with GameTap at least until October or so, so I'll probably take a look.

I'm still in a quandry as to whether or not to keep GameTap for another year... their offerings keep getting thinner and thinner. My guess is that they put a lot of dough behind this McGee thing.
My (admittedly limited) understanding is that fine artists and artisans are very welcome, not to say required, in the Guild of Writers. It's not only for 3D creators, and not only about writing ages. Would a separate guild really be a better solution?

(Christian, not a fine artist, not closely affiliated with any guild, and happy that the guilds are so open and membership in them is so loosely defined.)

Dunno.

I think Cyan would completely re-build Uru, or even go as far as moving on to something new and similar if it were currently within their means.

As it stands, this is all we have.

Here's the deal with all this... Cyan is presented with the fact that it has one of the most genuinely dedicated fan-bases that cares about their product to an incredible degree. Cyan still sees value in Uru.

...and so, by embarking on this bizarre experiment, which I don't believe has truly been matched in videogame history (Apricot (http://apricot.blender.org/) is probably the closest thing I know of...), they present an opportunity of showing others what this whole thing could be.

If it works, and enough interest is generated, the means will be there to turn it into something great. At this point, something like the addition of new tools for anyone to create new content, and rewriting the whole game could happen.

Otherwise, if this doesn't happen, the game still exists and is maintained by those who love it.

It's an odd crux point, and it's getting goof-ball that we even have to have naysayers and well-wishers on some pointless and arbitrary division line.

Geez, just let this happen. No one knows where it's going to lead, and this means YOU too. So knock off this senseless adversity and put your energies where you will.

Yes, lots of good ideas. I voted for the Cleft, mainly because I loved it as an experience...the opening narration and that fantastic moment when the music propelled you straight over the gate, and then the wonderful "Air Stream." As a first-time player I did find it frustrating because I didn't at first know what I was supposed to be doing (though I didn't do as badly as a friend of mine who failed to notice the trailer at all!) but I persisted and I got through. I can see the logic from a new player's viewpoint of starting at Relto, though I did think they could have done something to explain how the new player got the Relto book (but then that would have jarred with established players. Sometimes you just can't win).

Doing the Descent, walking from Cleft to City, is my favourite idea, and it would be great if we the current players could "discover" this route and open it for future newcomers, possibly working back from the city...but that's for when and if Cyan are able and willing to add those areas to the game, and that's a long way down the road.

EDIT: Possible variation on Marten's idea--you get asked if you're new or seasoned. If you're new, you get a brief cut-scene and narration explaining how you got your Relto book (some guy in a baseball cap giving out freebies to likely prospects at a gaming convention?) and then you go to Relto. If you're seasoned, you go straight there.

The issue gets more complicated when Cyan I.P. is used as part of a fan created age.

Like, say, a linking book?

I'm actually quite interested about this matter. I asked a similar question some time ago about the submissions that weren't chosen for the stained glass contests but I never got an answer to that.

They are basic commercials that are supose to have my information on the end. The company dosn't have time to fill in my information. I was just going to remove that part of the clip, as I don't know how to edit them myself. They are mpeg files about 4 mb each... and I have 4 that I want to download on a cd and loop/run on my TV screen at my booth.
