When I wrote that I meant the Uru player (who be us). Moot point now, and I realized this is foolish since it IS re-shown in URU
Anyhow, I guess this is begging the real question: how is it people can fall so far without being hurt in Myst?
Clearly the quote says the the telescope and the Stranger fell into the fissure, NOT Catherine and Atrus. The sentence could have been written more clearly, though.

Nothing in the quote looks like speculation to me.

Oh, I've got it. I thought they meant that the game player fell into Eddy County.

Just an admission of guilt here - I had an idea about what happens at the end of Riven, but I still haven't actually beaten it and seen that stuff getting sucked in. Heh.

Glad I asked, definitely!

Atrus comes to the Age regardless of whether the people are evacuated or not.

Atrus would not only have to link in the exact moment that the glass breaks (which he wouldn't be able to see), that means that even if he stops writing for less than ten seconds that the Age completely decays into nothingness. First of all, he doesn't write that fast , and second, realistically he has to eat and sleep, so the minimum amount of time that it would take for significant decay would be several hours, not several seconds.

The post by RAWA said that they sped up the decay of Riven at the end of the game to let you know what was happening. It is possible that Atrus had some other way of knowing that the fissure had been breached, other than the sky turning orange. So it would go something like this:

1. The stranger reopens the fissure. The telescope and dagger fall in.
2. Atrus notices that the fissure has been reopened. How he knows, I'm not sure, since it's impossible for us to know exactly what condition the gateway image was in. For all we know, he could also have been observing the situation on Rime.
3. Atrus links to Riven, with a way out for Catherine, and directions into the fissure for the stranger. Since the rivenese people actually were evacuated, any in-game representation of what would have happened if they weren't must be artistic license.
4. Since the Age has been emptied, Atrus stops writing corrections. Riven collapses over a period of a few months.

That's what I remember from RAWA, anyway. Since we already know that substantial artistic license was implemented, I'm more inclined to take his word on what happened over their representations ingame, but since I can't provide a link to his statement, I wouldn't blame you if you disagreed with it.

Okay, there are a few things wrong with that theory, regardless of whether RAWA said it or not.
This thread is actually quite strange because I read that article for the first time yesterday. Although I disagree with the fact that the fissure plays an improtant role in Er'cana.
It's only a pictoral representation of the star fissure and links you to the bahro cave which you need to get to later in the game not even from there, but somewhere else entirely in the Age. It's not needed there one bit.
And also, they treat the fissure in Relto as the same as the one in Riven, which, while it may lead you through the same pseudo-space and drop you off in New Mexico, they're not the same fissure, as they're in two different Ages. So there are multiple ones, even if they lead to the same place.

Clearly the quote says the the telescope and the Stranger fell into the fissure, NOT Catherine and Atrus. The sentence could have been written more clearly, though.

Well, the only part that is speculation is that part that the writer notes is speculation when he says "Presumably landed on Earth..." Although, since we know that the Myst book and the other Riven items ended up here, I think we all speculated the same thing.

Both the telescope and a bleached Whark skeleton can be found half-buried in the desert on the far side of a volcano in the game Uru: Ages Beyond Myst. The fissure plays a notable role in this game, appearing on both the player's home Age of Relto and in the Age of Er'cana. Which part is speculation? The Cleft is, in fact, in Eddy County NM, where a wahrk skeleton and the Riven telescope can be found. There are fissures both on Relto and (pictorially) on Er'cana, and the large knife that fell from Riven is, indeed, inside the crater of the volcano in Myst V.

The only part that I can think of that is speculative is the beginning, where it says that the opening of the fissure accelerated the decay of Riven. That's how it's presented ingame, but I'm convinced that there's a post from RAWA somewhere that says that the decay of Riven actually sped up because Atrus stopped writing in corrections once everyone had left. (I've tried for a long time to find this post, but I think it's vanished from one of those old websites that lost its URL registration or something. I'm pretty sure it was the same site that told me that Atrus and Catherine didn't write the fissure into Riven. And that no one took the red and blue pages to the Myst Ages, but they were taken there through some sort of mechanism built into the books themselves, by Atrus. And that the "linking window" to Selenetic from Myst was a stand-in for a vague reference in Catherine's journals that the link to the Selentic Age was powered by machinery.)

Well I know that the information about the location of the skeleton, telescope, and the dagger are all correct and IF I remember correctly the info about the fissure is correct to but the information about Catherin and Atrus coming to earth, I remember them using a linking book
At the end of Riven to escape the dieing fifth age
Hope that helps!
