While we don't have a specific rule against thread necromancy, 5 months is quite a lot of time between posts.
I'm going to lock this thread - feel free to re-open the discussion in a new one if you want to.

I don't really bother subscribing to threads. It just seems like unnecessary spam to me.
Although if it was an epsiode countdown thread, then I may subscribe!
Anyway, the drama was only showing via text, not a video containing graphic detail. So why does it really matter?
Cyan wanted people to feel for Engberg and be shocked at what happened, and they did it very well. You just cant get the same response if you took the violence out of it.

Aye. AFAIK, the DRC never said Wheely was shredded, nor did they describe what had happened to her in any way. The most we got was "it was messy", etc. People immediately linked it to the way the animals had been killed and started complaining about the graphic violence that Cyan was giving us, when in reality, they were the ones who came up with it.

I can't figure out this "graphic violence" thing. We never saw any graphic violence. It was never even described to us in any detail. All we know is that someone got killed in an extremely unpleasant way. We really don't know if she was shredded, or exploded, or just beat to death with a rock. Any sense of "graphic violence" is from our own imaginations.

Actually, didn't DRC members avoid talking about how Wheely died? I recall Nick saying it wasnt very pleasant, But i think its more of the people comparing how wheely died to the animals in the pod Age, that we know WERE shredded n messy.

Anyway, the drama was only showing via text, not a video containing graphic detail. So why does it really matter?
Cyan wanted people to feel for Engberg and be shocked at what happened, and they did it very well. You just cant get the same response if you took the violence out of it.

Not to mention, Kids can find more violent things on tv, other games, and like LordAndy mentioned, the news. Violence is a part of life *shrugs*

I personally enjoyed the story telling n.n

It's a matter of how to deal with it and talking to your children. Didn't any child clap his hands, when he read Peter Pan so tinker bell wouldn't die? How about the story of Cinderella, where her sisters cut their toes or their heel with a knife so the shoe would fit? How about the little mermaid more or less dying? What's with the little match girl? Knows anyone the German "Struwwelpeter" which was translated to more than 540 languages and teaches children what the shouldn't do by showing them possible bad consequences through violence and gore. (Even the classic story of Huckleberry Finn as a very adult child story, dealing with violence, racism, friendship and becoming adolescent.)

I'm afraid nobody reads the originals anymore. Fairy tales, Peter Pan, and Hans Christian Anderson's book are now Disney cartoons where such cruel things don't happen. I doubt the average American child has been directly exposed to any of the examples you mentioned with its violence still attached.

I personally think the idea of Wheely being shredded is a very mean one. If they wanted her dead, they could have killed her a nicer manner. They didn't need to make that horrifying and cruel of a way to die and I wish they hadn't chosen to do so.

I'm not so sure of that.

News is still presented in a reasonably dispassionate way, with emotional moments limited to a 5 second soundbite - Here we were presented with an extensive and highly intimate dialogue.

The TV news still tones down the descriptions of the damage done in a murder, and shows particularly sensitivity when it comes to children. A news report would be extremely unlikely to suggest a child's body was violently shredded.

Finally, just because news presentations are becoming progressively more violent, doesn't mean that games like Myst Online should follow that. That would be like arguing the majority of people are overweight so everyone else should be too.
What I'm trying to say is - it's not as much a matter how and how much violence there is, it's a matter of teaching the children, explaining them so they can differentiate personally, what's good and what's wrong, what's real and what's fiction, what's the moral of the story and what they should not watch on TV, e.g. because it's just some stuff for poor-minded people who can't enjoy anything but pure violence.

Cyan did a very good job, they didn't show any violence, they just told a story about this. No sensational pictures or videos. Most news on TV are more violent and have a worse influence on children than this.
