I wrote that just over two years ago, and a few weeks later I released MO:UL Statistics. It was super awesome for a while, and also super buggy and super complicated to maintain.

No, I'm not re-releasing it. Although I'd LOVE to! Seriously, I was so into it for a while I was obsessive! I've got a little too much on my plate right now, but I came across this post and decided to put together a page with statistics that I've been gathering anyway but wasn't publishing.

If you look at the original post in this thread it's about the little uptime status icons. To make that work, I poll the server status every minute and cache it...and that's happened for over 2 years now.

So, you know what that means! NERDY GRAPH TIME!!!

(If you don't see pie charts and stuff, wait 24 hours...I just did a server move and you're still seeing the old server)

Did you notice that it says that MO:UL has been online 100% of the last 30 days but only 99.9% of the last 7 days? That's a rounding error. Thought you'd want to know.

Are you as surprised by that as I am? Keep in mind that the status is provided by a human being at Cyan. If the server goes down unexpectedly, the status may still show that the server is online, so such an outage isn't reflected here. So, think of the graphs as showing scheduled uptime vs. scheduled downtime. Makes the graphs a little less interesting, doesn't it? Ah well. The line graph at the bottom is nice too!

Update: When I took the MOUL Stats site down I accidentally disabled the online/offline updating thing too. This has been fixed and the icons now work again. Enjoy!

Yeah caching is a MUST. Mine updates every minute. But there /are/ moments when it is unable to connect to the Cyan server to get the status. So far this has happened 10 times since 2011-02-11. Make sure also that your cron jobs have a time limit so they die as appropriate.

Much of the reason OpenUru.org proposed this idea to Cyan was to increase support for Cyan, MOULa, and open source to come. I'm very happy to see the Guild of Messengers carry that forth with their "Sign Up" link. Thanks, Leonardo!

There is one thing I'd like to mention in development terms about how the status is obtained. OpenUru.org originally implemented this dynamically. In other words, every page load hit Cyan's status page in real time. And so every page load on our website saw a slight pause for this one http get. If Cyan's site went down, which it does at times, the pause was excessive as the page waited for a timeout. After OpenUru.org released the specification for the Cavern Status feature, OHB wisely implemented it via a cron job which updates the status at some reasonable interval and offers a graphic to match the status. This means his server assumed nearly all the load.

As Mac_Fife wrote in our Cavern Status Widget wiki page:

Assuming the load upon our own servers and not incrementally increasing it on Cyan's is good manners as far as I'm concerned. So we changed our implementation to OHB's method of caching the status. Our website response was immediately and visibly improved as a result.

This is all to say that I hope anyone who develops this for their own website does the same by both caching the status and offering a "Sign Up" link. You can also use the OpenUru.org widget and style it as you wish, but GoMe's big green arrow looks very good and is quite effective!
