I'm not always the most polite person myself. It is good to stop and think, "By opening my mouth (or by setting my fingers down on my keyboard), am I helping or hurting the cause of Uru Live?"

Malia over at UruObsession has a nice quote in her signature.

Quote:

Before you speak, ask yourself, is it kind, is it necessary, is it true, does it improve on the silence? -Sai Baba

Words of wisdom, in my opinion.

It's nice that the Uru Live forums are better than many other forums on the internet... but let's not become too proud and lazy about it. I am glad to see someone say, "Hey, don't forget, let's make sure this place stays nice."

Hey! One of my favorite quotes from Sathya Sai!

Hmmmm...I just checked my (vast) supply and quite a few seem to be missing! All right, if you are going to use them, please make sure to use them properly. It's one-two-breathe, one-two-breathe:

and, of course, it is most effective when quickly followed by a cyanosis-enducing squish:

This is, of course, the well-known Stick-and-Squish Sequencing Method of Derailing Detrimental Interpersonal Nonproresolutional Griping, better known by its acronym--> SASSMODDING.

So ... keep in mind that while a stick in the eye helps get the point across, it never hurts to hug!

the thing to keep in mind, is we're likely to have an influx of 'gamerz' when Live launches...and we *MUST* keep our cool. No throwing hissyfits about l33t sp33k, no cussing and language, but no acting like superiour snobs, either. We'll have to lead by example, carrying on in our (mostly) civilised way, and let the mods carry the Pointy Stick Of Modly Smackdown, which they will hopefully apply with both consideration and vigor.

Eventually, the bad apples will either stop rotting and fit in, or go away. But if we start getting into it with the ones who can't or won't be civil, then we'll just drag everything down.

I've really enjoyed reading this thread. Since Myst games are the only computer games I've played, and URU Live (2004) the only on-line game I've ever played, I had no idea that the URU gaming community was any different than the norm. I appreciate it now, and all of you as well, more than ever.

After URU Live ended (what a very sad day that was, and what a jubilant day it was to learn URU Live was coming back!) I went over to Second Life for awhile. I don't remember if I found any other URU refugees, but it just didn't click for me (although I enjoyed the heck out of flying!) I suppose because there wasn't a shared mission/goal. Plus, my life was so full, I really didn't need a "second life." If I'm going to spend time pretending, I'd rather be in a group adventure than to simulate a "parallel" day-to-day life!

Sh'aeri, thanks for all your observations and input. Your words and sentiments reflect what I had come to expect wherever I went in the on-line Myst/URU community.

So..I guess other games don't have something like the Guild of Greeters?

See you in the Cavern! (I hope soon...)

                                      Yeah, I was lucky...

And yes, Vormaen, you're right, some "gamerz", as you put it, don't have the social skills that we cherish in Uru. However, when we run into it, we don't have to bite at the bait. I would prefer that we educate those people who come in with their "attitude" as to what is the right way and wrong way to do things here. We have all, at one time or another, had to learn our D'ni Ettiquette...I was lucky, as you said, I had Pepsi. What we can do now is continue her legacy...in which she said to me,

"Always greet everyone with a cheerful dispositon and with love in your heart".

"If you're going to give to the community, give all that you've got."

So, I think if we can steer those folks in the right direction with kindness and generosity, they'll quickly learn what the community is about and what our collective morals are. (Hopefully). But then again I am an idealist and I try to focus on the good before I look for the bad.

Everyone has their redeeming value. In some it is harder to find than in others, however that should not dissuade us from trying to help those who are new to our world.

See that quote in my signature? "Make your words kind, gentle and tasteful, for one day, you may be forced to eat them." Those are the words I live by and my friends have heard me say it many a time. So, before we lash out at someone for any reason, I feel that it is better to make our words kind, gentle and tasteful. Later on, we'll be glad we did. Remember, we don't have to regret or apologize for words we didn't say.

Wow, you were a very lucky person to have Pepsi take care of you (rest in peace.) It is unfortunate that people have to be they way they are, especially considering the tightly woven community we've built. But some come in with the "gamerz" attitude and mentality, and because of that, are competative in all the WRONG ways. Me, I have been guilty of being rude on a Myst forum, several in fact, but it usually is in response to a troll or someone that somehow disrespected me or anyone else on here.

The fact of the matter is that because of the net, people do not have those boundries they would have when meeting people face to face. So instead of applying those morals you would use in public conversation, they throw it to the wind, because there would be no punishment or backlash for being a complete ass on a public forum, save being banned.

I'm really sorry to hear that. From my point of view, I treat everyone I encounter, whether it be here in the forums or in cavern, like family.

Like all families, we're going to agree and we're going to disagree, but I don't think that it means we like or love each other less.

I'm sorry that you've had a tough time, but I'm going to ask you for a favor...give us a chance...we're going to have misunderstandings, they're going to happen, we're going to have heated discussions, but that does not mean that you are not welcome here.

We have all types of people here, thank Yahvo and the Bahro, so try different neighborhoods, try different times of day, I'm sure you'll find people of your like mindset and interests. This really is an outstanding community.

I'm a great example of how someone can have the wrong first impression...

When I came into Prologue, no one knew that Uru was my first Myst game. I took it the wrong way when people looked at me in shock when they found out. It took some time, and it didn't hurt that Pepsi took me under her wing, but now I have parental figures, aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters here.

Like I said...it just takes time.
