After all we are surface dwellers who are exploring - like archeologists - a "relatively" dead culture. Why wouldn't we bring our card decks with us to entertain ourselves? True, as we learn more about the D'ni culture we may adopt some of their "games", but this doesn't mean that we have to ignore our own. Oh for a few rounds of cribbage or pinochle with friends - or maybe a round of Texas holdem.

Anyways, I think we should have D'ni Culture games, if anything, in the hoods. I want to see how the D'ni occupied themselves when they were bored.

Five was an important number but not a fundamental one. The basic colours are six; in Ahyoheek you win by getting 3 of a kind; there are 29 'days' in a D'ni 'month'; and so on.

Gehn thought that everything D'ni had to have its base in 5, or be reconducted to 5. That is simply not the case.

I disagree. What about all the references in The Book of Ti'ana to 'The Five' and 'The Eighteen' when referring to the Grand Masters? Wasn't Veovis' father one of the Five?

Something to look for in the cavern, I suppose. I just bough my GameTap subscription yesterday...I can hardly wait! I really liked the tiny bit of Uru Live we got when the game first came out...except the servers were pretty slow. (overloaded, maybe?)

5 was to the d'ni roughly what 10 is us. It's important, yes, but we're not obsessed with it. Gehn was obsessed. Analogously, 25 was to the d'ni what 100 is to us: representative of completeness (think "100%" vs. "to 25").
As far as I know, that's a misconception. The number 5 appears a lot on Riven because it is Gehn's fifth age, and it just happens to be one of his most successful attempts at creating an age, so that probably made him fond of the number.

As for the D'ni, however, 25 would be a likeable number, representing infinity, and being the base number of their numeral system.

Then again, a lot of the numeral system is also based on a 5x5 grid, so I could be completely wrong.

Perhaps this should be clarified by someone (wink wink nudge nudge).

Actually, I seem to recall reading in one of Gehn's journal's in Riven that the number 5 was important to the D'Ni, and all their more interesting items had the number 5 somehow ingrained. Didn't D'ni have 5 Grand Masters before the Fall? 5 somethings. The council chamber had 5 thrones in the center.

I'd rather see D'ni games in the cavern, but I don't think they would have limited themselves to small stuff like one person games. I think the Wall is a bit closer to their style. Maybe we might see more recreation Ages?

This also brings to my mind the huge maze in Tehranee. But let's avoid games that involve hundreds of slaves, shall we?

Personanly everytime i find a new game or a new notebook i get chills and cant wait to oppen it read it and find what new doors are opened to me from its pages.

yea my version is a smaller version of the game, it was made as a project. The real board would be a 9x9, but I was starting for practical reasons and simplicity to make it as so. It could though be really easy to make it into a 9x9 rather than a 6x6. My board sint really playable, it was made for looks, but I could put together one that would be playable as a 9x9 and see if it interests ppl.

I think all games in the cavern or hoods should be D'ni related, like heek or Gemedet.

Other games like cards or pong could be on your relto and you can invite people to your relto to play if you want.

It really isnt that hard to imagine. I'll post some pics of as soon as I get my scanner working again. Best way to describe Gemedet would be to think of the connect4 game. Now imagine it being a 6x6 square rather than a 7x6 board. Now add 6 more boards beside it creating a square. This is in essence Gemedet, where u must make 6 in a row using 1 to all of the boards as needed. Difference is instead of large checky boards, it uses small round marbles and is a 3d box rather than a 2d board.

Hmm, based on the following quote from Book of Ti'ana, I think you may have gotten it wrong:

Quote:

“I’m fine. It was only rain.”

Aitrus stood there a moment, hesistant, not sure just what to say, then: “Would you like a game of Gemedet?”

“All right.”

He grinned, then nodded and turned away, returning to the tent to bring the grid. Smiling, Anna stood, then went across to clear a space on the table.

Gemedet, or six-in-a-line, was the most popular of D’ni games. She had seen a close variant of the game in Tadjinar, played by the Chinese merchants, but the D’ni version was played not on a two-dimensional board but on a complex three-dimensional grid, nine squares to a side.

From that description it sounds like the "board" is 9 9x9 stacked grids. The objective of the game is to get 6 in a row in any direction.

All job sites I am on have a deck of cards at the lunch table. Many times it is Hearts or Spades that is played. Poker is played on Fridays after the paychecks are handed out.

I don't know how possible that is. I don't know if there are any legal reasons why Cyan could not put card games into the game.
