I think it was the early D'ni who enslaved the Bah'ro, but over the millenia, they simply forgot about them, giving rise to the d'ni we see in the Book of Ti'ana. That they were still enslaved doesn't mean they were actively enslaved, just that they weren't free. After all, they were still enslaved 200 years after the fall.

I think Sharper's journal was referring to just the slave trade passing through Teledahn, which I don't think was comprised of Bahro.

I can't say I'm really as concerned about mystery as I am about the general tone and theme of the games. At least as I view them, the first three or four Myst games felt like they took place in a "real" world...a world with its own set of rules and mechanics, but one that still felt solid and lived-in. In contrast, when you look at Uru (and Myst V), ironically the part of the series intended to be set in the present day, you wind up with something that feels far more contrived, with a race of sentient beetles that sort of come out of nowhere, and Yeesha some mystical, near-omnipotent figure. The Bahro in particular are something I've never fully come to terms with; I just can't see the D'ni society as portrayed in Book of Ti'ana (which I think holds up as one of the best game-derived novels out there) subjugating an entire race.

But yeah, while I agree the canon of Uru is quite confusing, it's still best to think of it as "real". I mean, here's where the real mystery is, because we've already pretty much answered the questions of all the other games.

I think my most ideal personal head-canon would pretty much ignore the existence of both Uru and Myst V, and keep the novels as full canon. You lose all of the Yeesha/Bahro universe-breaking that way, and you keep open the idea of the events of the original Myst occurring in the present day, instead of 200 years ago. In the end, though, it's Cyan's story to tell, no matter how I feel about certain parts of it. Hence the Hood issue.

Speaking of which, does it annoy anyone else that in the announcement that MO:UL was going offline, they tried to promote a few new games? It was like "oh yeah, we're gonna destroy your community where you made lots of friends and had a great time... but give us money anway!".

It isn't part of the Myst storyline, it's a part of the "Uru" storyline. Never once was "Yeesha Magic" mentioned in any of the Myst games (Even Myst V. Although her random link in at the beginning of the game might be accounted for through "Yeesha magic," however it's more likely that she used a linking book.).

The whole concept of linking as such is based on instancing: Ages are alternate realities = different instances of reality. So I don't understand how people can maintain that instancing is not IC.
Apparently it is easy to accept a totally different instance/age, but if it only differs slightly from the next one there suddenly seems to be an IC problem...

The only problem with nearly identical instances is that to create them someone must have made many copies of the descriptive book and slightly altered each one of them. I wonder where Yeesha has stashed her descriptive book Xerox?

Instancing as a concept, yes, but not as the mechanism we see.

In Uru, two people linking from the same D'ni book (say, Minkata in the public Ae'gura) will end up in different instances. That means something else entirely has happened outside of the normal rules of Books themselves. Some element beyond paper, ink, and words. For places like Ae'gura and other Cavern locations, this was seemingly done for OOC engine-limitation reasons, not because the story or the rules required it. In fact it seems things IC were contorted to make room for it, such as the various neighborhood issues brought up in this thread.

In the end, there's no right answer anymore (at least not for us on the outside) because so far we don't know by which rules if any this unknown mechanic. No one is right or wrong when we don't have a common system to discuss other than "Yeesha Magic". It is intentionally opaque and obtuse.

Instancing that wasn't explicitly part of the story should have remained OOC, in order to avoid muddying IC with unintentionally unexplainable problems.

Actually, D'Lanor, to create identical copies of Ages, just copy out the Descriptive Book. You will then get Ages that all share the same described componants. If you are specific enough, differences are negligable.
