Companies don't make money for rewarding only the most rabid fanboys.
I disagree. Look at any of the current batch of MMORPGs - from Everquest 2 to WoW, Star Wars Galaxies - even Huxley (a first person shooter) will probably have significant goodies for those who play for a long time.
There's a differenece between 'playing for a long time' and 'being there from day one, and at least every week thereafter, oh and yeah, here's a big 'ol fat raspberry to every single one of you who was two weeks late, or took a vacation'.
To explain in more detail, since people don't seem to be understanding what I'm saying:
Assuming that Cyan will only release the 12 blue flames once, and only once each...
Person A is a rabid fanboy. They get all 12 blue flames. They get whatever content that unlocks.
Person B decides to give GameTap a try a few months into the game. They can only grab four.
Four years later, Person B still has four blue flames, and no content from those flames.
It's like only allowing people to get three of the four pillars. It's a sadistic taunt saying 'Nah nah, you can't have the cleft book!'.
Which is why I figure the blue flames will come out in a cycle.
