Post Posted: Fri Feb 16, 2007 8:30 pm — Post subject: I'm a bit upset about this - deleting Uru but not local data

For most games on game tap you get a message that says this:

After clicking Remove you may see a pop-up window with options for removing cached game and local data files if the game includes save points, scores or local settings. If you plan to redownload the game and want to save your settings, save points etc., then leave these boxes unchecked.

This option is NOT available for Uru Live, why? I need to totally delete the game locally and reinstall it to fix a problem but if I go through Gametaps interface and delete it I will lose all progress.

For some reason on my main pc I can no longer access Uru via the gametap client though it works fine on my laptop. The only difference between the two systems is that at one time I had the beta client on the main pc. After yesterdays update my main pc's access no longer worked. Everytime it goes to launch uru after checking for updates I get the error message 'failure to launch uru" I've checked logs, application logs, event viewers , everything and I have no clue why I am getting this message. Yes, all programs uru associated have the neccessary rights they need to go through my firewall.

Your actual progress is stored on the server so don't worry about losing your player state as long as you still use the same GameTap login your player will still be there.

If you want to save the downloaded files you can save the /dat and /sfx folders to another location before you tell the GameTap interface to remove the game and re-download it. After it gets downloaded again just copy your dat and sfx folders back in and you won't need to download them again.

I feel your pain Thanakar. I started GameTap last night and it told me there was an update and did I want to install it. I said yes, of course...

Well I couldn't run GameTap anymore. GameTap would crash to the desktop with a gametap.dll error. I called GameTap support and he had me copy the "games" folder to the desktop and uninstall and reinstall gametap. The new install is a little different and you can specify where your game files will be located. Anyway, after it reinstalled, I copied (be sure to copy, not move. Just in case of problems Shocked )the games folder to the C:\Documents and Settings\"your user folder"\My Documents\GameTap folder (or wherever you told it to install the data files). There should be an "appdata folder there. So you should have an appdata and a games folder. Start GameTap and check to see if your games are still there.
It worked fine for me and I didn't lose any games whatsoever. Laughing

Once you're sure everything is working OK, you can delete the copy of the games folder on your desktop...

::EDIT:: Now that I re-read your post, I see it's for Live... Not GameTap.. Embarassed

I think the very reason that this message isn't displayed is because no progress is stored on your comupter, it's all stored on the Gametap servers, so reinstalling will make no difference Wink.

The only content that is saved locally on your system is chat log files and avatar pictures from your closet. These are stored in My Documents\Uru Live\. I haven't checked, but I think that these files are NOT deleted when you remove Uru Live from GameTap. If my theory is correct, the absence of a checkbox wouldn't mean these files are automatically deleted, it is would mean the opposite... there would be no option to force them to be deleted.

That is thing , when I select delete at gametap advanced download manager for urulive it says that the local data can't be extracted to all save games and other information will be deleted (not just the game). There is NO clarification as to what is or isn't deleted, or if my game progress WILL be saved on their servers and I can safely use their delete interface to hopefully fix my problem. Neither gametap nor cyan support has been helpful so far in this issue.

So you are saying gametap keeps all progress from all games that don't store progress locally for all users even after that user has deleted the game through their interface?

It's true for Uru. I don't know if they store save games for other games on the server, too.

This answer confuses me even more....who owns the servers that Uru:Live is running on, Gametap or Cyan?

I've deleted all remnants of the beta client for my pc and I've reinstalled the game 5 times now and I still can't get past the popup that checks for updates then launches Uru. Urulauncher.exe does have access and is permitted to go through the firewall but something is happening between the checking for updates and launching uru that is blocking it. I can't tell becuase there is nothing in any of the application logs telling me what the problem is not is there anying in the urulive log files.

AOL. Why does it matter, though?

You asked a question, and I gave you an accurate answer. The servers are owned and operated by AOL, a sister company of Turner, the parent company of GameTap.

How does knowing who owns the servers solve your problem?

I know nothing of other GameTap games, but your progress in URU Live is definitely not stored on your local machine, but on Gametap's/Cyan's/AOL's/whoever's server.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the game will not loose your progress, with the exception of that small passport picture at avatar selection.

This is a little silly, and there's no need to be so obtuse about answering Thanaker's real question. He obviously made the bad assumption that Islander was generalizing how MO:UL saves it's data to the servers into meaning GameTap saves the state of all theirs games to the servers. Yes, who owns the servers is unimportant, but Thanker's question was really about understanding how GameTap works to better understand how removing MO:UL should work.

MO:UL is special in that it saves your game state on the servers. It does not mean that any other game on GameTap does this. Therefore, it's true that your MO:UL game state is saved on the servers even when you remove it from your computer. It is therefore possible to play your MO:UL progress from any computer which has GameTap installed while adding and removing GameTap at will. It is also true that other GameTap games, but not MO:UL, keep their game states locally on your computer. Removing them could remove your game states. You cannot expect these games to carry your progress from computer to computer or survive removal. Not everything works the same. You'll just have to know this. Obtuse answers do, however, make it more difficult to learn these things.

I hope that helps.
