Post Posted: Tue Aug 08, 2006 9:29 am — Post subject: The First Thing You Thought When Prologue Was Closed

The first thing that came to mind was when I jumped back into the single player and looked at my bookshelf. I thought:

" Crying or Very sad This will never get filled."

Then I looked at the other shelf and thought:

" :sigh: I wanted to fill that with my own note books."

Honestly? I thought it was a set-up. I mean, they closed the Prologue in what, February? A month later, they had To D'ni all ready to go, with the Path of the Shell well on the way?

I always found that a little suspicious. With the way everything was presented, especially in To D'ni, it made sense for a shutdown of the DRC to have been planned from the beginning, since it fit so well into the story.

I figured six months down the road, a year tops, Cyan would open Live for real.

That, umm.... didn't happen. Whoops.

I thought it might be back at some point, in a limited way...didn't think it would take this long, or that the fan base would be quite this loyal!

I settled in to play in single player mode...but had the same thought about the bookcase...hm, I'll have room for a mini-bar here... Wink

I am afraid my first thoughts are unsuitable to be repeated on a family rated forum. Or any forum for that matter... Rolling Eyes

My first thoughts were that somehow our loyalty might save it. I guess it did eventually. I originally thought we could somehow stop it from being shut down (though I didn't have a clue how we'd do it). As soon as it shut down, I couldn't stand not to be there, so I loaded the single player, and the Cavern was just too empty. It felt sooo lonely. Thank goodness for UU!

My thoughts were similar. I happened to be writing in my blog at the time, so my thoughts were saved for posterity. Recently read them. I was not happy.

Basically I did not, (and still do not), believe the official "not enough subscribers" line. As has been discussed to death, that reason makes no sense.

Anyway, that was the past, and it is water under the bridge now.

My first thought was, "And I would have gotten away with it, if it weren't for you meddling kids!"

...

Oh wait, you were asking about the Uru Prologue shutdown in 2004? Embarassed

My first thought was one that is not repeatable on a family forum.

My second thought was that I shouldn't get so excited by things; I felt that I had revved myself up too much and thereby amplified my frustration and disappointment. I was reminded that all things are impermanent. I felt that I had poured years of emotion and anticipation into the prospect of DIRT/Mudpie, then poured loads of effort, personal labor and emotion into making Uru Live succeed, and all for naught. Then I crashed-- hard.

My third thought came in the form of a dirge; a grand lament for the future of online gaming.

My first thoughts were that Ubisoft was a weak willed company that wouldn't/couldn't stay the course and didn't deserve a cent more of my money.

Mind you ... their actions are indemic of a modern business culture that has a hard time thinking beyond the next quarter. Not that I'm bitter or anything when it comes to the software industry Mr. Green .

I still haven't given Ubi any more money than could be helped. I bought Myst V and the Uru expansions on sale with a gift certificate.

I remember feeling lonely. Not because I was, but because the Cavern had turned into a place that suddenly was impossible to reach. Like finishing a good book in which the characters have really grown on you. Or knowing you are leaving someone you love or really like and you know you will never see them again.

I think this feeling was strong because the group wasn't that big. Not that I knew everybody, but still I knew/know quite some people yes. Having fun with lag, and just wondering around kinda was like fooling around with friends when I was at school. Off course the excitement and anticipation we shared and about which we talked a lot helped a lot too. Even when this turned into fear when we all felt something was going wrong.

I think that was also what was missing in UU: the anticipation and excitement.
