As we will celebrate St. Patty's day on the 17th I thought it would be fitting to versify his legend:
Of Scottish kin born and raised,
he came to Ireland in chains, a slave;
and learned the tongue of Eire
like a native son on fire.
As deacon, priest and bishop
he blest all the worldly people,
till Celestine sent him back to Eire,
a traveler among all Celtic tribes -
of Brittany, Cornwall, Wales, and Scotland;
yet, only on the shores of Ireland
did he banish that Old Serpent,
and came to be known as St. Patrick.
He came to Tara, Druid Land,
and banished the white haired priests,
and bathed the chieftans and princes
in the Holy Wells of ancient Light.
He saw in the shamrock leaf
the triune face of blessedness.
But some have said that Brigit laughs
at saints who shine on Brigit's day,
and sends her leprechans among the good folk
when the Spring fires spring from a good Sun Day.
