I would like to see that happen for you too Lord Chaos! Those are such fun events that I wouldn't want to miss one!

Wth one group dead against the creation of the temporary forums, two group leaders who suggested letting the guild make the decision and two for the idea. I won't activate the domain at this time I'll leave it to the GoM to do that.

however I would like to put forward the idea that a council be formed which makes decisions with a majority vote and will have a representative from every group (no matter what that groups size)

Steve, just to be clear. Is this a council representing the Guild of Messengers only? Or a council representing all guilds?

The issues of creating a forum, using a domain name, or planning a voting strategy will have long term effects on the GOM. It is my hope that no one will call for the creation of a "supervising" council so early in the process. There are a number of issues that need to be worked out, before we can even begin to presume to know, who is best to caretake the "keys" to the GOM. In my experience the "keys" are held by those who hold dominion over the forum and website, where information will be posted there at the "owner's" (admin group) discretion.

Because there are so many groups interested in forming or being a part of the GOM, it is even more important that we carefully watch for quick fix solutions that may cause long-term issues for the guild.

I do not believe that a majority vote, or any vote for any reason at this time is warranted. I think further discussion and lots of sorting out in the open (sunshine) is preferred by many of us, who have seen first hand how things work out for good or not-so-good.

I guess my question is: What's the rush? Cyan has set up a perfectly good forum area for all of us to work details out. While it always seems that the big decisions are the ones that count, its the little ones that can cause tiny snags and big rips.

I do want to thank everyone who has posted in this thread for being honest, because it helps to know where other explorers "are" when it comes to the development of the GOM. As an independent explorer, who is on the CCN team, I would like to call for a calm decision process to take place, and nothing yet to be decided.

I am not dead set against anything. I am dead set to consider reasonable approaches for a resolution that includes all the various communication groups in the cavern.

EDIT - It may be that many explorers have domain names ready to be activated. It could be that activation of domain name should be a very thoughtful, carefully considered process.

Surface life has been increasingly demanding, so I hadn't had a chance to really respond to anything.

Here's my generically humble opinion:

Leaders/organizers/head cat herders of groups (past and present) that provide services that would nominally fall under the umbrella of the Guild of Messengers should *absolutely* be getting together to brainstorm and create. Whether that happens informally, or as part of a jointly created council, is up to those people.

The Assembly of Guilds has got a nice place for GoM interested people to converse. The AoG was doing the work of supporting Guilds long before the DRC announced their Fab Five, we should respect that, and work with what we have.

We should be clear about our IC intentions, and our OOC intentions. These often overlap, but there may be times that they don't.

Very nicely worded post Ahvree! I agree on all points. I think you said what many of us are feeling. Very Happy

The suggestion would have been just for the messengers the idea was to create a interim authority which could make decisions based on what the majority of the interested groups wanted (each interested party would have had a representative.) The liasons are a great example of what happens when you have hundreds of interested parties but no one in charge, it wasn't until a few people took it upon themselves and did things. This idea wouldn't work for us messengers there would be peopple accusing each other of power grabbing so I was suggesting a more democractic system, one which allowed us to move forward but only in directions the majority of people wanted. It would have given everyone a voice but each groups representative would have been able to vote stopping things turnning into huge sized polls and regular flaming. Its the system I currently see as the fairest and what I'm going to personnally aiming for.

I know some people feel such a thing is hasty but I can see it taking us a year to get a properly working GoM functioning and over the years have learnt that the best way to break down a problem can often be to start it. I'm also curious why people haven't been posting on the UruGuilds forum which has been suggested as a neutral forum where no admins can alter things to their liking.

Possible answer.

Do not use my board to personally attack a fellow player for the way they have played a game. If you do not like the way in which they have played this game you have all of the tools available at your disposal for dealing with it, and none of them involve the unjust personal attacking and witch-hunting we have seen. You have had every tool spelled out for you. Now is the time to be an adult and to use them. You guys have the entire Myst forum-verse to engage in this kind of sad pathetic personal verbal violence. You will not bring it here.

Thank you for your understanding.

Please don't take the "GoO Mod," as a typical example of anything. His "guild" was a guild in name only, and was ultimately nothing more than a forum for rants and protracted debates on how explorers "should" express themselves and react to one another. He did nothing to actually improve communications. And he was biased.

You can, however, read into the response by the AoG Admin that the board is being monitored and policed, and no tin dictatorships will be permitted.

As far as I can see, Montgomery was sharing his distate for another player. While no direct insults or calls for insults were stated, this isn't the place to tell people you don't like another player. Montgomery, there really is no need to post your dislike for someone on a public forum.

This is not the place. This is.

If you wish to discuss whether or not a post of mine on an unrelated topic was appropriate, I request you do it there rather that hijacking this Guild thread.

Thank you.

From: Lord Chaos, Princeps Convector Felium, Rooftop Volunteer Group
To: Guild of Messengers organizers
Subject: Present need

Hi, folks.

All this high-flown talk about the Guilds is interesting, but I have a pressing need for someone to handle event publicity. In the heyday of the "Up On the Roof!" parties I did this myself: in-Cavern KI messages, forum posts, and a Web site. Then the D'net took over briefly. After that, Beta started taking our customers so we paused in November.

Now we're ready for a relight. To whom do I turn for publicity? Right now I intend to contact the Relayer Corps because they're actually operating, and are familiar with various communication techniques. If this is eventually taken over by the GoM, fine. I just can't wait.
Thank you.

Lord Chaos,
While the I would love to be able to help you advertise the "Up on the Roof" parties, the Relayer Corps does not handle publicity. We are strictly live event relayers and moderators. We do not do publicity. We have neither the time nor man power to devote to it.
I really hope that another news group will take it upon themselves to help you out with this. I would really love the chance to attend one of your parties. I wish you all the best in this most worthy endevor.
Lynnutte

P.S.
ROCK ON!!!!!!

LC, send me an e-mail at archiver[at]thecaverntoday[dot]com, with the press release or ad (unless you want us to write one ourselves) and we can get it into the next issue (coming out in a week, hopefully)

That's probably the best we, as a publication, can do. At this stage, anyway... Smile
