I would love to be a writer, but I do not want or even have the time to learn another program. Besides, I don't think my memory will support another download.
I do have some story ideas though. If someone has the time and talent to actually create an age and just needs some ideas. Please contact me here.

Here's my beef-

There's no way that Cyan would create and include a Guild whose job is making ages if the only way to do so was outrageously OOC.

That's why I cringe when you guys use the term "the only way." I really don't think all this outside programming stuff is exactly what Cyan has in mind.

If you're convinced that all this programming and rendering is "the only way" then I think you may be getting ahead of yourselves. Cyan has repeatedly said they intend on introducing age-creation tools for Uru, and Watson's recent speech almost screamed this IC.

perhaps some patience or curious correspondence with Cyan is in order. Ask them about their intentions so that you can be sure.

What they said.

I actually enjoy learning to use new tools, and I'm going to learn Blender and Python regardless, but we really can't say how or what we are going to do until we get some guidance from Cyan.

I always assumed there would be an IC explanation to go with it, much like the IC 5 stages of restoration correspond to the OOC stages of Cyan creating an Age or other area. Like, when Cyan starts allowing explorer-created Ages OOC, one or more people discover a stash of blank Books and Ink and a few copies of the Gahrohevtee IC.

Wasn't able to attend the meeting. I see that blender is on the proposed system for age creation. I highly suspect that if any tools are released an age builder will be included. Where 3d assets can be imported into.

So it would go...

1. blender/3ds max/Maya, etc.
2. Cyan Age Builder

I don't think blender will be the primary tool for age building any longer. The team that did that did an awesome job at figuring it out without official reference. But it's just a replacement for whatever cyan uses, and I really hope that Cyan will release that.

I suppose the gist of it is, we can't really suggest a production pipeline until we know what tools we are going to get, if any.

Oh and on the topic of IC or OOC. This process is almost certainly OOC. It would be almost impossible to create detailed assets in game.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to include the ideation process too.

So it would start with.

1. idea
2. proposal
3. conception. (ie...drawings etc.)

and so on.

Cyan uses 3DStudio Max internally.

It's a lot like Blender, but with a price tag of 600+ USD attached.

They use 3ds max as their age builder? That's interesting. I thought they just used it for their asset creation. 99% of game companies use an off the shelf modeling program for assets that is then imported into a custom builder of some kind. Are we positive they export directly from 3ds into age format? I suppose it's possible, I just find it more likely they have something else.

Oh and 3ds retails for $3500. The student edition may be $600.

They go directly from 3DS Max to Plasma.

A chatlog with Brice Tebbs explains the tools in greater detail.

Totally agree Maurus. Unless the folks at Alcugs and related efforts have been having secret meetings with Cyan, I think the blender plugin approach is very unlikely to be the way this actually works in the end. I think something closer to the Second Life model is more likely.

Right now, just Blender, the Alcugs plugin, and PRPExplorer or Plasmashop Smile
