Is there any other relevant suggestion at this tmie?

Your turn, Cyan. Good luck.

Long Live Uru Live.

I'll go ahead and paraphrase a couple things I mentioned in another thread:

Well, there are other MMOs: EVE Online is the one I think I'll subscribe to, although WoW was fun for me. But, of course, I like those because of certain inherent qualities they have, not because they're Uru-like in any way. Second Life is a bit closer with its focus on content creation, but not quite there. Garry's Mod (a sandbox mod for games like Half-Life 2) is one which allows a great deal of customization and creativity -- but of course it's still different. And while I hope this isn't in bad taste to plug these games so soon after the announcement about MOUL, it wouldn't hurt to give them a try (PM me if you do -- I might be able to show you around).

Another possibility is Cyan coming up with a sort of Until Uru thing again, although I don't know how likely that is. A slight alternative could be the resurrection of the old H'uru and Alcugs projects, which, I had heard, had found a way to run UU shards without Cyan's authentication. Of course, this gets into strange legal territory and Cyan may not want that to be an option. But if we can continue the great work the Writers have started in some way, we can build our own home.

I think it's best if we look back in the history of the Myst community to see what we had as our "home" before Uru was even known. We had text-based MOOs like Writers of D'ni, small websites which offered fan-made point-and-click adventures through amateur 3D-rendered Ages, and a thriving community of fan-fiction writers. It might be useful to study the old days and see what gave us our community then -- what sort of systems offered the best potential for creation.

Just to be clear, I'm asking Cyan to find a new home for Uru - not for explorers to go elsewhere, except temporarily. Because there's always hope.

In the meantime, if Cyan is willing and has no other plans, I suggest - because we already waited "Until Uru" - that they allow us to open shards again in a Return to Uru.

For Cyan and their worlds

WHERE YOU LEAD (with aplogies to Carol King and Toni Stern)

Wanting you that way I do
I only want to be with you
And I would go to the ends of the earth
Cause, darling, to me that's you're worth

Where you lead, I will follow
Anywhere that you tell me to
If you need, you need me to be with you
I will follow where you lead

If you're out on the road
Feeling lonely, and so cold
All you have to do is call my name
And I'll be there on the next train

Where you lead, I will follow
Anywhere that you tell me to
If you need, you need me to be with you
I will follow where you lead

I always wanted a realto with flowers on the window sill
But if you want to live in the underground City, honey, you know I will
I never thought I could get satisfaction from just one game
But if anyone can keep me happy, you're the one who can

And where you lead, I will follow
Anywhere that you tell me to
If you need, you need me to be with you
I will follow where you lead

Lyrics and Music: Toni Stern and Carole King

Very Happy

You could go thru the hoops to put all that together, and spend the years debugging it, or you could use a complete game engine that is already in existance and has everything you need.

I just think it figures that we have to go through this a second time. Crying or Very sad

I'm not sure I even want cyanworlds to continue trying at this. Two heartbreaks is to many.

No thank you. I have tried to use the Torque engine before, and have no desire to subject myself to that torture again. (And I write software for a living. That's how bad the documentation is.)

Now is the time for Cyan to cut their losses and start fresh. They need a new IP to draw in customers other than just diehard fans. Uru has proven - twice - that it can't do that. It's a great game and a unique addition to the Myst universe, but it doesn't have the kind of mass appeal you need to have in order to support an MMO like this.

Relaunching Until Uru with the latest content after the GameTap servers go down and then moving on to the next project seems like the most viable option here. It will generate goodwill within the Uru community, and it will allow Cyan to focus on something more manageable.

(All of this is opinion, naturally.)

Now might be the time for those who can "write" in the same vein as Cyan to use another gaming engine, one that doesn't crash when too many people are in one place...

And about the money.....even though it seems we are not enough to support this type of game...We are. I was totally upset and dismayed with the way Uru had been, and is being advertised. You can't bring people in if you don't target them.. This game was not advertised like it should have been when Ubisoft took it. They threw all their efforts into Prince of Persia that came out at the same time..and very little was ever seen of this one.
Now when Gametap came in, there also was so little content in the ads that most people thought it was just like the others.
Better and more directed advertising was needed this time. We still have newcomers who are so sad because they won't have the time in the cavern.

But that being done and finished. Using a different engine, may help those who know how to do these things.
Just my two cents.

Also, we could pull together our own engine - perhaps building on PlaneShift, after ripping out the RPG logic? Or useing CrystalSpace directly, or one of the other dozen Free Software 3d engines.

Then we would actually know how the whole thing works, and would be able to extend and support it rather than being stuck to something static, like Uru, or being forced to work in an engine designed for other games, like Source (which would also alientate the mac users)

I'm not sure where this thread went awry, but it's definitely OT and derailed.

It's not about engines unless that engine is in Er'cana. It's about using existing content under existing server and client software in a "Return to Uru" much like Until Uru was. But I would hope the community can form a cooperative, assuming Cyan doesn't do it themselves, to combine our efforts into one shard and perhaps one beta server for testing User Created Content before pushing it "live."

I believe this was all forseen, Destruction is coming, make a home.

This was in fact our answer way before and now we are just now realising it...

point 1 , The Guilds, Watson said this may take years, and the guilds are going to be the only way we can save our beloved home URU. Now with the guilds come user created content etc etc. ( Until URU with a structor now!!! the guilds that we have already made and are still making.)
Because of leagle reasons the Fan run shards etc. just will not fly if MouL stays with in GT.
So what just happened people? did we not just have a server move? anyone starting to see
what I'am seeing with all this? URU WILL LIVE ON! Becasue The ending can not ever be written!

Um, maybe it was because your OP was a tad cryptic, but that's okay, since it was obviously aimed at Cyan and they read fluent cryptic. Wink

However, if you want to hold a serious discussion about it with other explorers, perhaps you should post it on the Guild of Ideas website which has been reformatted to become the Collaborative Uru Development Project, a place where serious ideas for Uru's future can be considered, discussed and developed into serious proposals.
