Shorah

I got a new mac (woo! Cool), and am having a few problems getting Myst V (from 'Myst: The Collection' bundle) to work.
I managed to get it to install fine after following some guides on the internet, but the game doesn't start when I double click on the icon.
Does anyone have any ideas? Again, I am running Leopard (10.5.2) on an Intel iMac

Thanks,
Sel

Thanks for the link, but I've already successfully installed the game- and I had to fix the files manually myself. The problem now is that when I click on Myst V: End of Ages.app on my desktop, the icon appears to open but nothing happens! A similar thing happened to Myst IV, but I can't work out how to apply the same method here.

To fix Myst IV installing but not opening, you had to fix permissions. Like this:

- drag the installer application from DVD1 to your hardrive;
- Open the Terminal application
- Type 'cd ..' and press return, then repeat a couple of times, until typing 'ls' and pressing return shows that you are in your main directory.
- Then type 'cd *folder*' and press return, then repeat until you're in the Myst 4 directory where the files are. I know there should be a quicker way, but this is the only way that worked for me, eg. 'cd Ubisoft' return, 'cd Myst4' return.
- Then you actually 'cd' (change directory' into the Myst4 application itself by typing 'cd Myst4.app' or whatever it's called.
- Inside the application there are various files, and you type 'chmod a+x Myst4' which modifies the permissions in some way.
- Then double click on your modified installer application and installation goes fine.

Shocked Once... was enough. I'll keep on trying today, but if any resident mac users have solutions, don't be afraid to share!

Thanks,
Sel

(Eric's find and initiative re: Vista SP1 bug)

Have a look here...

Awesome! I've downloaded the patch, but I'm not sure where to put it- the readme gives instructions for vista, not mac.

You will need help from an iMac person who has a Myst 5 installation. I only know about Windows XP.

Did you chech the lower section at this link ?...

Yep, I used the method down the bottom to install Myst V- the patcher kept on throwing up errors, and the game still won't work after a complete reinstall. Perhaps I should post on a specialised mac forum for some help. Anyhow, thanks for helping, and I hope I'll be in Dereno soon!

I hate to say it, but I gave up and installed it in XP (running in Boot Camp on my Mac).

Yeah.... I was considering that, but I just escaped windoze Laughing!

There's still an XP machine in the house, so I might use that rather than put another OS onto the new mac! Let's hope that it installs fine onto that!

EoA works alright here on my MacBook Pro (ATI X1600) on 10.5.4, so it can't be a general Intel problem. A few stabs in the dark:
  • I doubt that that's the problem here, but have you tried updating to the latest Mac OS (10.5.5 at this time)?
  • When you open /Applications/Utilities/Console, choose Open Console Log from the File menu, then try launching EoA again, does anything appear in the log that looks relevant?
  • Since you know about the broken permissions with Revelation, I assume you've checked that the permissions are OK here?

I have Myst V working perfectly on my 2006 Macbook Pro running 10.5.5. It's from the standalone DVD edition. I used the Luc Carlson method in Arctic_Wagon's post and it worked straight off.

If I recall correctly, only the Myst V installer is a Universal Binary, which means that the actual game may run rather slow. If you have Windows installed using Boot Camp, you may indeed be better off by simply installing it there—it'll run faster and it'll be easier to install.

is the console readout- it is a permissions problem after all!
Hmm. Well... embarrasingly, I don't know exactly how to check/change the permissions for Myst V- I merely copied the permission settings down from a website and used them for Myst IV Embarassed! I'll look over the instructions for IV again, and attempt to puzzle it out.

@dnidaz: lucky you! it seems to be a kind of random thing that works for some and not others. Though Luc's method did work for the install here as well.

@ddfreyne: yep, you have a point. if the game lags too hideously when I get it to run, I'll play it on a windows computer

Leo, click the "X" button top right of the second post.

Btw, I vaguely remember something about some Mac players using
the Myst 4 installer to play Myst 5 but I have not found yet, the said
comments at ubi english.
