Post Posted: Tue May 16, 2006 11:26 am — Post subject: the Myst books (Ot/Maybe Spoilers)

This post is, something of a reccomendation, something of an expression of shock/awe/delight, and I hope this is the correct forum for it.

When I first encountered Uru, and then Until Uru, I was not familliar with the three MYST novella/history books, I knew some of what happened in Myst and in Riven, and that was it. The texts within the Cavern and Yeesha's words, combined with the comments of those int he community, and the person who had rekindled my love for the series gave me some feeling for the import of what was happening in prologue/live/uu, but I do not think it had given me a full appreciation for the .. weight of the IC events?

From the same person who reawoke my interest, I was lent the three books, and have this morning finished the Book of Ti'ana, and found myself stunned. The writing is good, but it is more than that ... knowing the circumstances of the Fall of D'ni, the atrocity that was perpetrated by those responsible, knowing what a slim thread remained between then and now .. what a smallc andle burned in the desert keeping the dream of D'ni alive .. it has given so much more weight, so much more impact to Uru.

And has made the joyous news that Uru live is returning something I cannot find words for. the significance of being able to be a part of the restoration of D'ni in this way, of this second chance feels like a thing too large for words now.

If any others are, like me, newer players, or unfamilliar with what is written in the books, I really would reccomend you seek them out, all three books are available as a single paperback now, called 'the Myst reader' for a very low price on Amazon and similar sites, if the story, the history inspires anything in you, you will not regret it.

For the older players, I think now I understand a little more of what this means to you, and it is something very special indeed.

Thankyou, all, for listening to my rambling Wink.

Yes! Well worth the read, if you've not done that. You can order a Myst Reader with all three versions in it from Amazon.com I've got one hard-cover version of Book of Ti'ana, with the map inside the cover. Very cool! Great book(s). Very Happy

The books are wonderful, and I think they're ESPECIALLY relevant to Uru players. Very Happy I had read the books prior to entering the cavern for the first time, and I was beside myself at getting to actually visit the places I'd read about. Even the blue flowers at the bottom of the Cleft had me smiling in glee, because it was so very right.

Also, the hardcovers are GORGEOUS. Faux-aged pages, beautiful covers, just the size of a linking book... Wink I have BoA in hardcover, plus all three in softcover. Someday I want to get the other two in hardcover also. (Oh, and for good measure, I have a copy of From Myst to Riven.)

But they don't come with a linking page... sigh.

I too hadn't read the books when I found URU, but once Live was cancelled, I found myself with a lot of time on my hands, and a hunger to learn more.

I was fortunate that the boyfriend of a co-worker had a first edition copy of the Book of Ti'ana in hard-cover that he didn't want, and he told it to me for a very good price. Since then, I've found the other hard-covers through Alibris, but I keep those in a very special place in my bookcase. I purchased a set of the paperbacks to actually read. Smile

I recently finished the Book of Ti'ana, and it gave me a much deeper appreciation of the restoration, and of the D'ni people. I have a feeling that these books will be read many more times before I'm called home to Yahvo.

I dont think Uru would have sparked my attention had I not read the books when I did. I have all 3 and have read them namy times. I was one of the few ppl who waited and bothered bookstore employees till they came out. Still will if the fourth one ever gets here.

Ur right, Myst, RIven, Exile all help to play fundamental parts when reading the books. Having explored and finished the first three adventures as well as reading the books, makes all that much more of an importance to the storyline and exploration in Uru and EoA.

I don't think this is OT at all. The three books provide some great history and in doing so enrich the experience of being in URU. It's one thing to visit some old site, it's quite another to visit the place where ... happened - you look at the place through different eyes.

I ended up hunting down the hardcover copies of the Myst books for a few reasons: The design of the books themselves (cover, how they made the pages look, etc...) is awesome, so I can have durible copies on my shelf in my Relto, I needed the map of the tunnels, and the hardcover "Book of Ti'ana" was the only place to find it, and a bunch of other reasons!

I am glad as hell that I've found them, because now, when it gets cold outside, and I'm not in my Relto or other places, I can sit by a roaring fire at home and cozy up to one of these books. A definate must-have for both the casual explorer along with the afficianado alike.
Smile
