Post Posted: Thu Dec 04, 2008 2:42 pm — Post subject: The Gahreesen Wall

Man, it's been a long time... I've been thinking back to when the Wall was functional, if barely. I only climbed it once, and that was in the company of other explorers who talked me through the procedure.

So for the sake of refreshing my memory, as well as for the edification of the many who never made it to the Wall, what was actually involved in doing the Wall climb? I vaguely recall using one of the machines in the Fortress to get a Maintainer suit... how did we do that again? And I remember - barely - using the control panels in the observation rooms to set up the "maze" that the other team would have to solve.

One thing I do remember is that once we made it to the top, we'd sometimes link to the Desktop Age. Yes, it was buggy.

Anyway, can someone give us a rundown on the whole Wall experience?

Thanks!!

Mowog

A very nice story about the Gahreesen Training Wall can be found on the Guild of Greeters website:

Wow!

Well thanks for all the info, folks. You know, it's kind of frustrating to think of all the development work that went into building the Wall game, when so few of us were able to actually use it... and for such a brief time. Kind of makes you wonder what else Cyan had in mind for Uru that just never happened for one reason or another.

Brief time? Shocked It was available all through Until Uru which lasted nearly two and a half years. Exclamation

Since all of the files are available in Uru:CC why can't it be turned on again? I checked and I see all the necessary files still there.

It certainly was! I really never played the Wall with others, but I did get it working by myself just in order to see what it was like and so that I could scarf one of those Maintainers suits using that interesting bug. Wink

It was so buggy, you could never get all the way through it in UU. Crying or Very sad If you made it to the maintainer's room, you pretty much had to F4 out since you were paralyzed. I loved it and hoped it would come back to MOUL. Bummer.

Here is the instructions I've had on my site since UU days.

http://www.mtn-man.org/mystURUmaze.html

The room had noticeable changes in MOUL. It looked like they had worked on it to make it functional in MOUL but never let us have it. When I get home, I will find the images I took of the newer device that sets the grid wall. It had definitely been changed.

Yes it was and it fun was too. (^8

I too use to play it alone to practice so I could hopefully be competitive. I'd run around an set both sides up then go run the wall maze I created.

If you did the wall thing you could get the suit and you would have your Ki showing while wearing the suit. The bug gave you the suit but your Ki was not showing.

The images I posted were taken in the prologue and not in UU. It was bugged as most of garheesen, most of the time your avatar could not stay on the same level of the ground. Anyway I was lucky enough. it always worked in my Garheesen, don't know why.

Another bug allowed you go to Ae'gura and still wearing the suit. Smile

When I played it in UU, it actually worked, sorta. I set it up, pulled off the climb with a friend (I won, but I'd been playing the game a lot longer) and linked into the room. I wasn't frozen, but it did reset all my clothes (Bizarrely, as he was dressed in default too I thought it'd swapped our avatar designs until I saw him arrive). I could move, couldn't relto. The problem? The stupid dispenser put the book out the SIDE of the pillar. That meant no clickable region, and none where the book *should* have been. None anywhere! I had to quit anyways, then reset my appearance when I reconnected.

But it was fun. I kinda wish we'd gotten the ability to put a lot more blockers though, so it'd be more of a challenge.

The reason why I didn't have much success when I tried to turn the wall on in CC is mostly that there are footsounds in there that don't exist in CC--thus, a crash when you try to walk.

No, I don't think _all_ the files are the same though. The UU wall files are much larger. CC contains a shell of what the wall was in UU.
