Post Posted: Sat Dec 13, 2008 7:18 pm — Post subject: A Bit Early to Ask But

I have a few questions about Fee's, will they be monthly, every six months, yearly, will their be a credit card option or will we hafta use pay pal. I know for anything like this to work there is always a business side, and I do want it to work. It would be great if we could run this site clear past the break even point in to the black, and have plans for what we can do if the site starts running in the red. I feel if we prepare ourselves for such things they will have less of an impact because the possibilities where anticipated from the beginning and we will already have an outline of a plan as to what we do as an alternative to a shut down due to lack of membership due's

Pessimism put to good use?

Um.......

It's gonna be free.

Some people will probably ask for donations at some point, but no initial cost will be on you.

Donations sound great, but there needs to be some sort of incentive for paying them.

Anything from just a big button at the login to giving extra shirts or actions for donating.

I am sure there will be many benifits for donating. Thinking purely of the kind of people I see setting up servers, the community as a whole will be generously rewarded with new wonders. Very Happy

I think the extra actions or options depending on your donation might work, but that kinda leaves out those who can not donate. I always thought of Uru Live as a place where every body was on equal ground. I know everybody has some kind of talent and can contribute in some way whether its a monetary donation, tech stuff, Idea's or just some one hanging around who knows the Caverns inside and out.

I see their still is some things that might hafta be worked out somewhere along the way.

anything worth doing is worth doing right and will take time and effort on everyones part

From UU, donations will be very useful. Maintaining a shard costs money.

Here we have a company to which we owe our very existence as a community, a company that has consistently created the most ethical and beautiful games / stories / worlds, a company that is currently barely staying alive, a company that is simultaneously giving away one of its crown jewels - to us.
We need Cyan's involvement in this project; not only during the transition, but - to whatever extent possible - on an ongoing basis.

If a means is made available whereby donations can be made to Cyan when this project comes to fruition, I certainly hope that the community responds with an outpouring of appreciation that floats the Cyan boat!

I understand your feelings, Emor, but considering the economic times and the cost of running a company, donations to Cyan (outside of morale-boosting fan-funded pizza parties, of course) are very unlikely to be that helpful.

If this new Uru will work anything like UU, then shard administrators could use donations for the cost of running the servers.

Uru Live will always be part of Cyan just like Cyan will always be part of Uru live, I can see some benefit in Cyan trusting the fans with Uru Live, because as long as we promote Uru Live we will be promoting Cyan as well. :- )

Maritova> a quote from the press release on Cyan's upcoming plans:

Quote:

"We will also host a data server with the data for MystOnline."

I'm astounded that folks are considering donations to those who might host servers, but few if any have considered assisting the company that is making all this possible at a time when they are barely squeaking by.
And I also must take exception with your assessment that even small donations from this community could not make a meaningful impact.
Do you not believe that at least 1,000 regular players will be online in this upcoming incarnation of URU?
Do you not agree that a $10 donation from each would make a difference in Cyan's ability to carry this project?
(...and I believe that those are very conservative numbers...)

OK Emor,

But how do we give it to them, and will they even accept it?

I'm actually considering contributing to keeping the dream of Uru Live alive a Cyan creation, resourceful people find a way. If they are trusting us to keep Uru live alive, can we not trust them to keep Cyan the creator of Myst alive. Perhaps some where down the line they might surprise us with some ages that have never been reviled, and tell us of their success. Cyans name will always be on Uru Live and as long as Uru Live exist people will know of Cyan, what more can we do, how else can we help
