Hi all,
Massively ( http://www.massively.com ) is the best site around, if you ask me, for info and commentary about MMOs. Good writing too.

And - they picked up the Uru story!

Cool, mszv.

Is it alright to rebrand this thread as "Sites that have picked up the story" or similar? There are some other important sites that are covering the news.

Among them:

* Slashdot - where stories about Myst Online have traditionally been buried due to lack of interest by that community

* Dave Rosenburg at CNet / News.com picked the story up from Massively. The last line of his message is a heartening personal comment.

Also, here are two peripherally interesting pages:

First, I found this post at Ludus Novus interesting for its reference to community member belford. No pressure there, right? Smile

Second, Massively is running a follow-up story, titled Open Source MMOs.

It's neat that sites are picking up the news, but saying that the art gets open-sourced is incorrect. Artwork usually doesn't have "source", and artwork is almost never released under an open-source licence since those are only meant for source code anyway. Licences such as Creative Commons are better suited for artwork.

Good article. I like that it's started some discussions about other games which could benefit from this model. Nice to see that attributed to a Cyan game for once. Cyan's done something really bold, and that's good in my opinion. The only way to get ahead most of the time is to take risks and hope they pay off. Whether that happens remains to be seen. Very Happy

This is so wonderful and really touching, thanks mszv and Marten... Very Happy

And I absolutely agree with you, Whilyam, as of the risks and everything...

And yes, Cyan is again a forerunner in gigantic and legendary moves...
Many Kudos! Thanks! and Thumbsups!!! ... Razz

The Linux and Open Source blog at ZDnet, written by Dana Blankenhorn & Paula Rooney, has an article titled "Can open source save gaming companies?"

Interesting commentary - and skepticism. http://blogs.zdnet.com/open-source/?p=3191

Total Open source often happens either for a lay persons created project, or when a game company disapperars and the game is left orphan and they may inherit the code. This will be shared access content, thereefor limited open content and the art and the story remain totally and thankfully THANKFULY Cyan's total property. I am looking forward to player made add ons and mods but only with the option to try them or not as we choose. Pure URU MOUL needs to remain pure.

The news about Uru is now on Gamasutra - the site for people in (or interested in) the game business.

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=21548

This is exciting!

Incidentally - Gamasutra is a good site - very interesting.

I've seen a lot of comments in those articles of non-Myst fans being interested in helping program the next generation of Myst Online client. And lots of new people joining the forum in the past couple of days. This was without a doubt the right move. Good job Cyan.

Also congrats to JWPlatt. openURU.org is even getting mentions in the latest gaming news.

Shocked

I better get to work.

Edit: Oh, geez, thanks for the pointer. I am NOT hosting the open source code. OpenURU.org is a site for Uru community project development and is not affiliated with Cyan. The open source code repository is completely up to Cyan and it will be hosted at some other kind of place I even quoted Chogon as mentioning. I have not spoken to Cyan at all about it, nor they to me. But if it is allowed to publicly store it elsewhere in some form, I will.
