It doesn't overdo the "oh, oh special interface" thing too much. It's functional and not in-your-face (something I liked about the old MOUL avatar-selection-screen--even though that thing was sorta odd and... too much tan o.o).

Exactly. It is simple and functional, while still looking elegant and Myst-erious.

It's become clear to me that the correct way is to allow players, perhaps through some apocryphal configurations file setting or (ideally) through something located in the UI's options itself, to alter the UI colors and aspects of it themselves, or at least choose from some presets. I might go from having no overlay to using a sepia overlay, for example, depending on what's wished. Having the two UI layouts Tweek has constructed is a major improvement in terms of choice on top of all the usability improvements, so anything further is icing on the cake really.

There's just one problem. What theme will the login be? The only thing really after that is the avatar selection. Is it that important just to change the color scheme there? Perhaps instead we could have it so that each shard would choose its own backdrop for the avatar selection (if they don't chose, it reverts to the Cleft or something).

The backdrop would be a partial model, in the example of the D'ni style one I did, the ground and harbor railings would be 3D and the D'ni backdrop would be a simple 2D plane with a cavern texture on it.

The Cleft would pretty much be the same.

Huh. That sounds pretty nifty. Source engine providing some inspiration here?

As long as everything's visible, I would forget any objections. Is it planned to incorporate some subtle animation in there?

I *personally* think the default scheme should be a lower-contrast one that will be less straining on people's eyes. Other people will say the high-contrast would be better from an Accessibility (i.e. Windows) standpoint. I guess I'll just take my answer off the air; I'd be happy to change it later. After all, going from high to low contrast wouldn't take long enough that my eyes would become strained. I'm happy enough that an accommodation was made for my request!

Cool. That basically kills my idea of having the shards make their own. Maybe they could pick from a few, though.

So is the avatar actually going to move around?

Perhaps a slightly lower contrast version of Tweek's original (dark) design, with the Cleft backdrop?

Well, Ae'gura or one of the other city locales (like a Bevin) makes sense for a dark UI. Tweek didn't pick the choice of background for the first batch of shots by accident. Despite what misgivings I have about the high-contrast look, the result of lowering the contrast on a black background will lead to people with vision problems having more trouble. Best to keep that dark UI high-contrast for that reason.

High-contrast: For getting details right the first time!
Low-contrast: Tan, more like paper

Nice design. I am still opposed to an in-game interface being used (especially one that people only get after a little gameplay) as the out-of-game interface.

I see where you're coming from, and I had a little bit of brainstorm on the issue. I know the player doesn't get the KI for a while into the game, which makes the totally KI-centric version of the interface out of the question, but the KI isn't the only hologram enabled device in URU. If I remember correctly, there's the nexus terminal, and the neighborhood imagers; the nexus terminal uses an orange theme, and the neighborhood imagers use the same purple theme as the KI.

This presents two options; keep the interface purple but replace the KI in the background with something styled after the neighborhood imagers, or change it over to a to the orange theme of the nexus terminal and use that style throughout. Both are fairly "generic" compared to the KI...what do you think?

I see what you're saying. [really random and NOT a point to be argued about and yes I know it is near impossible and makes no sense] but I would really like an avatar screen with the backdrop of Eder Kemo... Very Happy [/rraNaptbaaayIkiiniamns]

Aaaanyway,

I see a third option of using Tweek's design. Don't take me wrong, you're going in the right subdirection. However, I still don't believe that using an in-game gimmick of any kind is the right direction. This is a menu, and so we should err on the side of simplicity, dignity, and functionality.
