Post Posted: Sun Jan 11, 2009 6:51 pm — Post subject: Interview questions for J.D.Barnes, Echo McKenzie-IC+OOC

In an upcoming Guild of Messengers newspaper, the Messengers will publish the results of an interview with J.D. Barnes and Echo Caoimhe McKenzie... and their players. This interview will be divided into two parts.

The first part of the interview will cover in-character questions directed to the personas of Mr. Barnes and Ms. McKenzie. The second half will entertain out-of-character questions aimed at the characters' creators!

Questions will be collected in this discussion thread, here at the Myst Online forums, and in a similar thread at Uru Obsession. The cut-off for questions is Sunday, January 18.

As we do not yet know how many questions will be asked, we cannot guarantee that all queries will be answered, but the GoMe and interview participants will try to respond to as many items as possible.

Hi Marten.

I have no idea who these persons are.

Could you shed some light as to what "they eat" in real life. ? Laughing

J.D. Barnes is an anthropologist and writes very interesting articles on the DRC forums
Echo Caoimhe McKenzie knows a lot about the D'ni history.

(and yes it is allowed to talk IC in this thread Wink )

OOC: Did you enjoy playing when conversing with other avatars and you weren't quite sure if they were part of the story or just role-playing as well? Why? What suggestions do you have for novice Uru players to create that effect more often?

(I know, 3 questions, but if it's an interview there should be follow-ups. Smile)

For J.D. Barnes

What got him interested in the Laura documents and his the work still continuing? If not, will he start working on them again once the cavern reopens?

OCC: Is or was he getting help from Cyan with these document, and what direction was he going with them?

For Echo Caoimhe McKenzie:

Did the D'ni have slaves that were more human looking than the bahro? If so, did they have them in the cavern, on different ages, or both? Were the bahro controlled by the D'ni elite or was there enslavement a more common practice?

For both:

Will they be playing once we are allowed back in the cavern? If so, how will this new game setup affect their characters and how they play them?

Here is what personal knowledge I can add regarding these two characters (some of this has already been mentioned in questions asked thus far):

The character of J. D. Barnes is perhaps best known for introducing a fan project titled the Lara Documents. The project created a context where participants could write stories, parables, and other documents that might have been part of D'ni culture. The project was designed in a way that Cyan could, if so inclined, declare the Lara Documents as historically accurate, as forgeries, or as a mixture of real and fake papers. In this way, the determination of "canon" stayed in the hands of Cyan, while players could enjoy adding to the mystique of D'ni.

The character of Echo McKenzie is a little more odd; when she first visited D'ni, players observed her kneeling to the ground quite often. When she would later stand up, she would profess to have heard a story from the stones, and would then relate that story to anyone who would listen. Player reaction to Echo was more mixed than for J.D.; a lot of people held skepticism for her "mystic powers." Echo McKenzie has a blog, here: http://echomck.wordpress.com/

The first half of the interview (the IC part) is now available in the February 2009 Guild of Messengers' Newspaper.

We plan to publish the second half of the interview (the OOC part) in March.
