Here's another interesting article about Apple's "opaque review process" for the iPhone App Store:

This is why someone other than Apple needs to apply ratings. Console games are rated, and if they get an AO rating, then they cannot be used on 360's, PS3's, or Wii's. It's cut and dry. Apple insists on rejecting apps with "objectionable" content, but it is unclear where the line is, so you have to make your app for kids because you might get rejected. It's unfair to developers and it's unfair to consumers who have a limited choice of titles that are for adults. Assassins Creed, for example, does not have blood, and this makes me think that they purposely removed it to make sure the app wouldn't be rejected. I don't know about anyone else, but when I stab someone in a video game, I want to see blood. Anyone else have any thoughts?

Let Cyan's first gold mine be open. I think that it will help Cyan to release Open Source MystOnline.

Update (3/26/2009):

We got an email from Apple that we needed to re-upload our binary. Not sure why (did they lose it?) but it took me a couple of days to get the binary re-uploaded because of troubles with the Apple servers. It is there again and Status: In review.

BTW, the price currently set for Myst on the iPhone/iPod is.... $5.99

And thanks for the gold stars for all the Myst iPhone team:

Wow, really nice! Original expectations were in the $10 range. Very generous. And enticing, right? Smile

Bummer! Sad Thanks for the update! The price is quite low for a game like Myst, but hopefully that will lead to many customers. Very Happy Very Happy

By the way, is Randy (not Rand) still at Cyan? Smile

A game like Myst will get plenty of App Store front page exposure. It's a real coup for Apple to get Myst on the iPhone. One of the most famous and popular games ever, recognised brand... Though a huge portion of the iPhone userbase are kids too young to have ever played it. The $5.99 price point is very attractive. Apple will prioritise getting this onto the store. Though they don't seem to have done a very good job of that so far Razz
