There is only one age that is NOT multiplayer, notably the cleft. (And the nexus, but it's hardly an age). You will have your own private ages that are yours (instances if you will) that are not influenced by anyone else's playing of theirs. You can invite people to those instances, and they can come and see them and play with you and such. It's a good way to play them.
There's also ages that are open-public where everyone can (and will) visit.. the pubs, the neighborhoods, and Ae'gura, as well as other places. Some of them are also hood-instanced which means only you and members of your neighborhood can visit it.
This means almost everywhere is a social area. It's closer to say SL or There or what have you in that regard.
Much like those places, any relationships are the ones you bring and make yourself. You'll meet new friends no doubt down there.. and while there are "factions" so to speak they're what we make, and thus aren't programatically enforced.
The summary is that what you do is up to you, and treat it more like you would real life than some 'game'. And have fun
