You could have stopped right there. Wink

And I don't see any point in killing one should a fan and programmer wish to devise one, since it happens to be his favorite platform.

Plus (while I haven't seen it discussed anywhere) it could EASILY be set up to provide a revenue source for Cyan, where a desktop widget could not (so easily or with nearly as much impact).

Just because you don't have one doesn't mean thousands of players don't and would get value from the app. Maybe Christian could tell us how many of his Pod Clock apps have been downloaded to give you an idea ,,,,

Woops, you're right. I didn't read carefully; I thought the clip you'd quoted said, "I don't see the point of an iPhone app...". I missed your point completely.

No worries. I have an iPhone and I use it, although I sometimes do not see the point of even having one (usually when my apps are misbehaving). Smile

Misunderstanding aside, my comments on two of the raised points:

Obviously Cyan or other fan developers are free to do as they like, but should I decide to develop such an app (which is completely uncertain at this point – I am interested, but lack of time or technical difficulties may dictate otherwise), it will be free, and possibly open-source.

I can do that. As of yesterday, there have been 341 downloads, 119 of which since the opening of MOULa. Not quite thousands, but still many more than I expected. Although I suspect that a good number of them, in particular the 1–2-downloads-per-day trickle it stabilized at in the weeks before MOULa, were not Uru players, but people who just happened on the app in the App Store, downloaded it because it was free, looked at it once, and, having no clue what to do with it, deleted it again right away.

Christian -- I was one of the pre-MOULa downloads, just 'cause I thought it looked so darn cool. And it is!

But then you probably came in the initial spike after the release in December, not 7 weeks later.

Hmm.

Well, since you are working with Cyan on this plugin, I think you ought to consider the following from our proposal to do this years ago: "link" all the IM clients to one age, rather than to one age apiece. I called it the "surface relay" age at the time.

This would make the IM client simpler, be easier on the server, and help make it clearer to others that you're using some kind of non-Uru client (rather than "being in the age"). Although you can easily enough spoof the latter. The only issue with the surface relay age is that you would have to do something about /shout.

What age to join is one of the things we've been considering. I would have to double check with Paradox, but I think he was planning on using D'ni Riltagamin as the "age".

D'ni-Riltagamin is a name. You can use any old name you like (the potential for abuse is endless!). I'm not talking about what you call it. I'm talking about what game server you connect to to send and receive your messages. An alternative to lots of single-occupancy ages just for IM clients. But it would require a separate age with a fixed UUID (this is nothing new), hence it becomes possible if Cyan is working with you.

Would this actually require a separate age? Is there any server-side restriction that prevents you from linking everyone to the same instance of the Cleft?

No, there isnt a server-side restriction. Everyone could just be in the same instance of the cleft i suppose, but then you'd see everyone there, like in your buddy list. doesnt make much sense to me to do that. What i would do is have everyone in their cleft (or even a null age, you know, just blackness) instance. My reason for saying we should all be in separate Surface (what i'd call it) instances is the only real utility to this type of thing would be to talk to people on your buddy list or possibly your hood (since the hood list would be fetched too, may as well).

I am not sure, but i think it would actually require a lot of work to have a central/public "lobby" instance that we would all be in. The server would have to know not to try and send any avatar location updates/physics etc..

That being said, i really want one on my iPhone.

Obviously the IM client should not display the Age Players list, ignore any incoming age player chat, and not send any itself. Would anything else be needed to give the illusion of not being in an inhabited age?

Am I mistaken in assuming that the server won’t broadcast any position updates if it doesn’t get any from the clients? Which it won’t since there would only be IM clients in that instance.
