The server itself doesn't know the positions of the clients, it just relays the messages that the clients send it.

This brings up a point: Desktop KI users should never be in the same Age instance as UruExplorer users. The KI will be sending as few messages as possible, so UruExplorer clients in the same instance would probably see a whole bunch of default avatars not moving at the LinkInPoint (if we even send the Load Avatar and Link In message).

Conversely, the KI Desktop users should never be in the same Age instance as UruExplorer users, because the KI will not be designed to handle position update messages, animation messages, responders, SDL, etc. It will likely just ignore any message that isn't KI Chat (or necessary for KI Chat).

As for the single Age idea, my initial plan is to not have any Age Player chat, only PM chat with buddies and neighbours. KI chat does require joining an Age instance though, so I'll be in contact with Chogon to find out whether he/Cyan would prefer all KI users in a fake Age, or all KI users in their individual Relto instances.

The Pidgin KI Chat plugin is beginning to take shape. With Zrax’s libHSPlasma(Net) library as a backend, I’ve started committing code to Google Code.

At the moment it does nothing useful (I haven’t even tried compiling), but I’m hoping to have buddies showing up in the buddylist before the end of the month. Based on school exams and my upcoming Co-Op job, I can’t make any guarantees though.

For those who like to poke around and follow development:
prpl-uruki on Google Code

Announcement from my blog, which pretty much summarises the project so far.

Very Happy This seems to be a very excellent idea but will this app be compatible with the Ipod Touch and not just Iphones?

There’s no reason why such an app should require iPhone-specific hardware, so it should hypothetically run on the iPod touch (and iPad) just fine. For my part, when I say “iPhone”, I usually mean “all devices running iPhone OS”, I’m just too lazy to spell that out.

One note of caution – your “will” sounds very confident. To date, as far as I know, there is one iPhone developer who has expressed vague interest in starting such a project (me), and zero who have expressed confidence in their ability to successfully complete it, so I wouldn’t bet too much on that there “will” be such an app.

I am currently trying to familiarize myself with Plasma networking (based on the work of Paradox, Zrax, Hoikas et al.) and have 6 days of vacation remaining. I have no idea how far I will get, seeing as I’m trying to catch up with years of reverse-engineering experience in very sparsely documented terrain.

There was a point where I got buddy lists loading and displaying properly in Pidgin, and included instructions on how to build it (http://paradox22.wordpress.com/2010/05/14/pidgin-2-7-0-with-prpl-uruki/).

I haven't touched it since then, and libHSPlasma has undergone a number of changes (largely for the PlasmaClient project), that prpl-uruki no longer builds.

Not "exactly the same as WhoM"...

If Zrax is still having KI chat problems with Dirtsand over the December break, I'll probably try to get the chat code working enough to help him debug.
