As far as I know, that's a misconception. The number 5 appears a lot on Riven because it is Gehn's fifth age, and it just happens to be one of his most successful attempts at creating an age, so that probably made him fond of the number.
As for the D'ni, however, 25 would be a likeable number, representing infinity, and being the base number of their numeral system.
Then again, a lot of the numeral system is also based on a 5x5 grid, so I could be completely wrong.
Perhaps this should be clarified by someone (wink wink nudge nudge).
