I suspect you mean Dr. Watson Wink - to the best of my knowledge RAWA has never appeared (publicly, at least) in the cavern.

oh... ok, i see then... this is one of those ic vs. ooc things, isn't it...?

Richard A. Watson of Cyan Worlds, Inc. vs. RAWA vs. Dr. Richard A. Watson of the DRC...? etc., etc.

so Richard A. Watson of Cyan Worlds, Inc. has never made an in game appearance but Dr. Richard A. Watson of the DRC has then, eh...?

Just to clarify: Richard A. Watson, Community Manager (among other things) for Cyan posts as RAWA here and serves as the actor behind the DRC character of Dr. Watson in the cavern.

Heh. Topic drift is a part of life on any forum... this isn't too bad either as it's related to the idea of a preprogrammed in-game cutscene (like say all of the holoyeesha or Radio Free Bahro encounters) versus in-game.

The bahro in game that were not the one at the book, the ones flying overhead, the ones atop the caldera in the rainy 'ending', and possibly one or two (like the ones atop the buildings in Ae'gura that would raise hands then vanish, but can't be sure of those) were controlled by Cyan employees. Probably ResEngs, as higher-ups would have the npcs like the DRC and such to play and answer lines. The bahro were people however, moving about and suffering just as much lag as we were. They probably had strict orders not to use any speech and to respond with a few emotes to a few things but no spoken text (which helped the idea of them not understanding our language, but copying some gestures to try to better get them)
The other ones were also Cyan controlled.. and we've even found out who a few of the faces behind the avatars were. I admit, having people playing them made them all real... the one thing that still sticks in my mind about MOUL is being in the city in the wee hours of the morning, and having Dr. Sutherland come down and join the circle sitting, and just chat. Not the usual press-conference setting she usually has, but actually opening up and talking as a person. It made her feel *real* to me, a person with her own problems and own goals and doing her best, not just some character in a story.

As for the Yeesha in K'veer, that was an employee working from a script, judging by the way it was done. Besides, ignoring what explorers are saying to give her lecture before vanishing is VERY Yeesha behaviour, wouldn't you agree? Wink

yeah... typical self centered classically Mystesque enigmatically vague yeesha... Razz Wink Wink
for the one who holds all the answers she sure is reluctant to share...

"what you have failed to hear you do not understand or don't need to know..." yeah, easy for HER to say... she speaks in tongues and probably spends too much time in teledahn...! Razz Razz

anywho... sarcasm aside... my point in my initial posts goes hand in hand with your statement...
forget elves and goblins and trolls and +2 dwarven broadswords of orcish dismemberment... URU is REAL rollplaying!!!

hardly resembles roleplaying doesn't it...??? Razz Razz

huzzah for Cyan having the guts to forgo cardboard cutouts who bark out orders to go and pick fifteen purple petunias then send you off to go pick twenty blue daffadylls until you wonder just who is so sick or so in love that this standing posterboard would need such a hefty bouqet without any degree of explination...

roleplaying is not about stats; stats are a throwback to pen and paper where a useful ruleset had to exist...
roleplaying is about being the character YOU and I want to be!! URU, I am I, He is He and She is She!!

Dr. Sunderland was more than an assemblage of ploygons with texture maped faces... she was a person, because there was a REAL person behind her!! she lived, she breathed, and Cyan always ensures that we buy into that illusion!! Very Happy

Before URU came along Myst was all about the place, now we have URU and it is just as much about the people!!
Cyan goes to great lengths to ensure that so much believable detail is put into the place and its people and its culture and geography and history and legends and all that makes an evnironment REAL!!

and that's the lesson for today...

hm..? this thread's been on hiatus for quite some time... but recently reviewing some of the comments reminded me of what i had intended to say before this thread went to bed...

i REALLY enjoyed this discussion!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
i hope there is still some life left in it!!

someone also mentioned known faces behind the characters...
is there any reference for that? i'd like to see some of the names and faces behind the characters Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

also, Dr. Watson is Richard Watson's in game ic counterpart...
when it comes to Rand, i don't see why there would be reason for anyone other than him to be behind the avatar since his character and he himself are both one and the same essentially...
but when it comes to Dr. Watson being IC and Richard Watson being OOC i wonder if it was always the "real" Richard Watson of Cyan, inc behind his in game dopleganger???

did Rand or Watson ever use voice chat???

I saw Rand and Rawa a number of times in the earlier days. Rawa tended to use text chat, Rand only used Voice chat, as he it was his preferred communication method. Robyn stopped by a couple times the first week I was there, and he used Voice as well. He even did the Sirrus voice once. But only once.

/me bangs head against wall...! Shocked

Why..!? Why oh WHY did i have to miss out on uru's glory days..?!!

man, that would have been neat to see!! Very Happy Very Happy
i'm still waiting for Rand to grace us with his presence again... Crying or Very sad

but Robyn with the sirrus voice... Classic!!

Rand's voice is pretty unmistakable... both his own and the tone he developes as atrus...
thanks for the word!! pretty neat stuff!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

could it be that "Dr." Richard Watson perferred to use text chat because it might not have always been the "real" Richard A. Watson behind the controlls???

I know! I was wondering if I should ask where he is again. Last time I did that he showed up. Very Happy Don't worry, though. There are plans in the works to throw Cyan a party once Stoneship hits the App Store and hopefully they can come to it.

If I recall correctly, RAWA is a little self-concious about his voice (doesn't sound at all like you'd think) and prefers to type. There's an interview with him on a podcast somewhere…

apparently i've not checked the headlines... completely off topic but what is "Stoneship" beyond on of the other four ages in the original myst game...??? plug in for myst app, perhaps...?? or a game unto itself? some other form of media? is it derivitive of the stoneship age at all?? i should look more into this matter....!!
... i'm thinking black ship pirates, but i'd prob be getting ahead of myself...

I think Rand was last in Uru in June, 2010. That's the last time we had a chatlog.

Stoneship is Cyan's new iPhone game, coming soon!
