This is nitpicking I know, but...

How is the top wooden part connected to the bottom wooden part? (ie. what's to stop it just rotating with the shaft?)

The handle and counterweight clearly pass right through the metal bit in the middle. Since that bit rotates, it presumably splits the top and bottom wooden bits. I thought perhaps there was a clever arrangement where a central wooden bit goes down the middle and the lever's fulcrum goes either side of the wood. But that doesn't work because you've still got to transfer the motion back to the central shaft at some point, so the top and bottom wooden bits still can't be joined together.

The handle is only to get the windmill started, right? And you don't have to push it all the way around to get it going, so possible the rotating handle is only connected to the windmill for part of the cycle, and spins just from momentum on the other part.

No, it's permanently connected. It continues to rotate at the same speed as the sails (but the counterbalance tips it upwards so you don't get thumped in the back by the handle after you start it up).

It has a lot of momentum. Wink

Still doesn't explain the point I think was trying to be made. The bottom wooden support is stationary, tied down by the ropes. The middle counter weight rotates and the wooden piece on top is stationary. How does that piece attach to the bottom below the counter weight. It should be spinning. Either that or the D'ni are far better engineers than we.

There's one of the Bahro holding it.

See it's easy when you know how

Hmm, you've got me. I can't think of a good reason why the top wooden part should be freestanding (as it clearly has to be), yet not also rotating with the metal bit.

A technical option is that it has an internal epicyclic gear train keyed to the metal part which contra rotates it to the blades and shaft.

As this is in proportion to and exactly oposite to the rotation of the blades it appears to be stationary.

Or there's a Bahro holding it

the only way it could be done, is by very strong magnets coupled with a partial rachet system.

Anna was a very good engineer.

A possible reason for this is the rope attached to the upper wooden piece in question - it's possible that ropes could be attached to the three supporting posts for added stability.

sorry Jkla I scan read past your post. your way probably works.
Anna really must have been a good engineer, especially for an epicylic gear (what ever that is) sounds very complex, and i haven't a clue how it works. especially to counter turn in the exact opposite direction. I'd love to see plans for one of those. It would be facinating to see.

It also sounds like too complicated a thing to be put into a minor part of the machinery. Logically, at least.
