IIRC, the Santa Hat does disappear from your closet after some time. But if you put it on,
it will stay on as long as you don't take it off. But I could be wrong about that.

I do know that the St. Pat's hat is still in there (or it's in mine still). Perhaps Cyan doesn't have the energy to remove them this time around

You are referring to the "true" seasonal clothing system which was abandoned long ago (in 2003 I think), most likely because it could be tricked by changing the date on your computer. With this system the Santa hat would disappear from the closet if you never wore it.
Ever since Prologue seasonal clothing has been added manually through the global reward system. For this system the only requirement is that you log in during the time that the item is "turned on". Then even if you don't go into your closet it will remain there.

the hats were always available earlier than christmas day...was disappointed to go in today and no hat. i guess they forgot to turn it on. ahh, well, life goes on - hatless...

Still no hat. I don't know where the rumour that it'd appear on Christmas day came from, but I don't remember it ever working like that before - I'm sure it was around for a week or more before Christmas.
I suspect it has to be manually enabled, and with little or no Cyan staff on over the holiday, I think it might not get enabled for a few days, if at all now .
