I choose to be a bit more optimistic...Maybe...just maybe...Cyan is gonna reward us as a community with something because we have made it this far at CAVCON 4. These little interruptions only seem to bother a handful, so I can't see this as a server shut down...I contribute regularly and I haven't had any money rejected...lol Razz

While I agree that, based on what's happened so far, shutting down the servers would be a tad extreme, it might be what's needed (as much as I DON'T want to see Uru go again). It has to do with Cyan upholding their word. They've told the community that, if the hacking/cracking isn't restricted to the alloted 'hoods, then the game will go away. By not following through with that statement now, they're weakening themselves in the eyes of the "black hats", which could lead to more serious breaches of security in the future.

However, I think they might be better served by turning the gray hats into the new ResEngs, and letting them deal with the black hats. :/ It's certainly a tough situation.

Charura, that's certainly something to hope for! Yay cautious optimism!! Very Happy

all this over, for all we know, could simply be a minor maintence issue... not necessarily uru armagedon

Possible, but I doubt it. Based on the other notices about maintenance outages, all of which specifically state the reason for the outage, I'd say this is for a different and more serious issue.

As noted, there was no announcement. We were playing, I was chatting with hoodies (heh) as we watched these hoods pop up in the nexus and then BAM net6! If it was maint wouldn't they warn us? And do it early?

That's why, as I said, I'm suspecting this person might have done something more serious, because while correlation isn't causation, three offensive-named hoods and a sudden server yank right after suggests something was up, something big and serious. Offensively-named hoods wouldn't require a full stop and "until further notice" downtime, right?

I really hope this isn't related to any black-hat behaviour but I don't know.. the problem is as I noted I don't think there;s a good way to stop it, the cat is long since out of the bag. The grey hats are condoned because they stick to where they should out of agreement that otherwise Problems happen, but it's sort of voluntary compliance. Cyan can't force people to follow it without some serious things done they probably lack manpower/manhours to work on.. and the fact that it's showing up means we have some people who are playing about, and may not actually be just playfully experimenting but going darker. Earning the black as it were.

I'd like the idea of unofficial ResEngs myself.. but we'd need a lot of them, and it'd have to be people Cyan could trust. I mean they hired community but when the idea of 'hiring' grey hats was put up their response was "NO!"
So what's left, empowering others to do it? Going all out arms race and vigilantes to stop griefers and grief griefer-stoppers back and forth? Shutting down the servers permamently? Cyan taking all of their cavcon-4 budget and then some to designate someone to do a full-out rewrite of the vault and connection protocols?

Is there even a solution? Typically hackers get into an arms race.. the grey hats play nice because they love the game too.. but they're not everyone as we've seen. Confused

Im curios, what possible motive would people have to do this sort of thing if they knew that it result in a possible shut down until further notice of MOULa?

Quite probably, they're immature net-idiots that feel the need to show off: "Oh, look how AWESOME I am! I can mess with the game any time I want!!!" And this regardless of the consequences to the game and the legitimate players. Sometimes I hate the web, lol. Rolling Eyes

I may be wrong in this but after looking at this whole situation from a different point of view, the donations presently are enough to keep the game running with a small surplus for unforeseen expenses, when the donations are sufficient to keep the game running with a small surplus for unforeseen expenses in addition to enough left over to hire Cyan employees to continue working on the open score project, it is only then we will be able to go to the next level.

this sort of thing just pushes it back further then it already was. Kinda like shooting yourself in the foot before a 12 mile hike

On that note… It would be nice to have some kind of response from Cyan telling us if they could use more donations to do whatever it is they're up to. If it's a security fix and they need to take from the CAVCON fund to pay an employee to do it, I for one would like to know so that I can help out if necessary. I'd really rather not see the CAVCON level fall…

whatever the issue is i'd assume Cyan is in the process of working on it. if the server isn't back on by now it's obviously something a tad more critical than a simple maintence issue.

still, it would be nice to have some sort of official word from cyan as to what the heek is going on

[was that too demanding?]

worst case scenario, this is uru armegedon again. best case scenario the server comes back up in a couple of hours and we see if cyan has anything to say about it (as well as any possible ramifications)

if they must draw from their funds in order to get back up and running again, fine by me... this CAVECON level allows for it.
dropping a level wouldn't necessarily be good, but i doubt it'll kill us. so long as pulling from any funds doesn't cripple em, we're fine i suppose... as long as it means we can get back in as usual sooner rather than later with as little repercussions as possible.

the occasional bug fix and (god forbid) CAVECON 4 funded open source was a pipe dream anyway... besides, i'd rather they use reserve funds for when this stuff goes down anyway...

Not necessarily true. It's possible that there are simply other things that are more critical. Sometimes you just have to wait for the priority list to pop things to the top.
