I don't know what to say. After trying to press this issue for over four (?!) years now, one of the most notable pieces of restoration era history has been reclaimed. Bevin... the first D'ni neighborhood to be restored by the DRC, the first accessible area in Uru... is finally a name that has meaning again.

It's a little difficult to definitively call this a victory. The Nexus is still full of hundreds of 'bevins,' and this late in the game it seems unlikely that people are going to be producing very many 'neighborhoods' to replace them. But at the same time, the fact that the problem has been ACKNOWLEDGED and ACTED UPON is HUGE.

I'm simply overwhelmed. I feel like an impossible hope has finally been realized. In the context of someone who never knew Uru outside of MOUL, this may not seem like a big deal. But for someone like me who religiously followed the old DRC site, taking in every detail of information like it was a morsel of the finest steak, every single day WISHING that I could be in this mysterious "Bevin" neighborhood that they were talking about? This is incredible.

Thank you, everyone.

Not just the people who fixed the code, and not just Cyan who finally found the time to push the fix out, but to everyone. Every explorer who rallied behind this cause and stood with me on the Great Stair, every ResEng who put the corrected information into their orientations, every historian who made the effort to dig up even more details about the original Bevin, Seret, and other neighborhoods. Even every single person who simple threw up their hands and said "Language evolves!" or "Who cares, it's just a name!" - You guys kept me riled up and ready to fight, even pulling me back in when I had pretty much accepted defeat and was ready to walk away.

And now... I feel like I'm done.

I spent years hoping to see the Great Zero lit... and even longer dreaming of a day when the lake would begin to show signs of life. After both of these things came to be, I felt like the last 'restoration project' that I could really hope to be a part of would be the education of people regarding the true meaning of 'Bevin'... and now, that too has been restored. Most of the people I spent my time in D'ni with have moved on to other things, and a new guard has taken their place, working to make the cavern into a home. I've been quiet for a long while myself, but I've still been here... watching and waiting for things to change. But I think it's my time to drift away as well. Maybe someday I'll feel 'the call' again, but for now... it's time to focus elsewhere.

However... to all of you open source people... if someone screws up history again, I hope you're prepared for me to be breathing down your neck for years. Smile

People of Earth. I must go now. My planet needs me.

For our next trick, we'll replace allthe quabs with laxmans.

Just to give you something to be upset about.

Now THERE'S a mental image! Especially if they're all tiny, Quab-sized Laxmans.

I actually don't get what all this Bevin name fuss is about - perhaps I'm too new. To me that age has always been called Bevin & they're lots of different instances of bevin, different neighbourhoods - but apparently that's wrong? Confused
anyway...

Hey, viddy!!! What are you doing to us now???!!!??? ... Now, that we thought you'd be one
of the happiest D'ni descendents already considering and pondering the next objections to
bring about and to challenge the Makers (Cyan Worlds) and the whole restoration process
and all involved even more ... Razz

Dearest vid, I can only say, we have to thank you as well for everything you've done for the
restoration and comprehension of the D'niverse... All your contributions to those projects and
to all of us as of learning, reflecting and translating into canon/D'ni sense etc. and above all
your contributions as a wonderful, gentle and smart fellow explorer and friend are immeasurable...

If we had a memorial for famous and legendary explorers and restoration engineers your name
would be written on it ... And you really and tangibly leave a legacy behind besides sole memories...
Just think of the legendary Spoken Word Night, the awesome 'RECAP: The Restoration So Far',
the restoration of the value of the original 'Bevin' of course etc.etc...

We at 'The Great Tree' are already thinking about establishing a new neighborhood and giving up
the old one for 'Bevin's' and victory's sake btw... Cool

Hey! Any open source people ready to screw up history a bit for keeping him in our midst?... Smile

Vid, whatever your projects now, whatever your further intentions and ideas, I'm wishing you the best
of luck and everything you might ever wish and need for yourself or might be dreaming of ... Shorah ... Very Happy

That's what the fuss is about. New people get the idea that Bevin is instanced. It's not. Neighborhoods are all in the public cavern, spread across the wall of the cavern. So when you go from Ae'gura to a hood, you don't go to another Age, you go to the same Age but different location.

Woah! So there are over 50,000 neighborhoods around the Cavern wall?! How big is this Cavern? And how can we all see the same thing through the telescopes? And where did the DRC get all the equipment (cones, lights, barrells, etc.) to put in all of them? I mean, it would take a fortune merely to supply beach balls to all of them. No wonder they can't find funding!

It's a shame that the KI malfunctions in every hood. For some reason, it always displays the exact same KI coordinates no matter which neighborhood you are in. Wink

Well Vid, if you feel like it's time for you to move on, so be it. Seems like an odd time to depart, what with all the recent excitment, but I respect your choice. The drifting away of you and other longtime players kinda has the same sad wistfullness as when the Elves set sail for Valinor at the end of Lord of the Rings. The Age of Open Source has truly begun. But as an old guard myself, I'll stick around and see how things turn out. Good sailing, friend. You will be missed.

You could argue that most hoods are empty, and so new hoods get those spaces. It's more of a technical problem: you either cap the number of hoods and have different locations for each of them, or you instance the Neighborhood age and pretend that the KI is broken and it always displays the same coordinates, that hoods get replaced and so on.

But IC, the hoods are alongside the wall. Most of the equipment was already there since the time of the fall and I guess those Eddies did cost a fortune Very Happy

EDIT: It seems that at some point Cyan wanted to have Bevin, Seret, Kirel, etc as the only hoods people could join. But then you get into another obstacle -- you need to cap the population limit and with new people signing up every day it's a bit hard.
