A number of Uru fans play in Second Life, the proprietary parent of OpenSim. The Devokan Trust members build regions in Second Life (SL), OpenSim (OS), and Open Uru. For some time we have been hearing of ways to put SL or OS in smart phones and in web browsers. Those ideas tend to use the concept of running a server and a modified client in a set of cloud based servers.
For Uru this would be like running the MOSS server in the cloud and modifying the CWE client to run in the cloud too. A smart phone or web browser would act as terminal to connect to the cloud based part we think of as the game in our computer. No game download with gigabytes of games files to download. No waiting for updates. No need for high powered video cards. Just point your browser toward the game and play. In overly simplified terms it is like interactive video. All the 3D stuff renders in the cloud and just the screen images are sent to the smart phone or web browser.
There are several groups running OpenSim grids, the open source version of Second Life. The largest grid is OSGrid. Another one is SpotOn3D. Now it seems SpotOn3D has made a plug-in for web browsers which uses the Facebook API to connect to an OpenSim grid from Facebook. The big thing is there is no need for basing the server or a modified client in the cloud. So, SpotOn3D regions can be on Facebook just as Farmville is. We won’t see Devokan members connecting their OSGrid regions to Facebook. But, some may move to SpotOn3D where residents may be doing just that.
