Hello,

Is the Data Server having problems at the moment? I'm having a murderous time trying to get into URU because the launcher keeps crashing when it tries to update. Is it up? down? overloaded? Is something else wrong?

Thank you,
Jayim

Server may not be down but something is wrong. First time I ever recieved an "Error 16 Internet Connection" message. Everyone who is in the City crashes. Folks in other ages remain online. We're at 2 times and counting. Very Interesting Confused
Edit: Now 3 times in 40 minutes

My launcher crashed on its first launch, however it was fine every time after that (so far). I haven't actually logged into the game, only opened it.

Well, I still can't get into the game. I open the launcher and it crashes. Just says UruLauncher.exe has stopped working. It rarely gets past the 'Checking for patcher update'. About every 10 times or so it gets past the 'Connecting to server', and about every 30 or so, it actually checks for updates. Of those few times, maybe one out of 5 it will start downloading the updates (150MBs worth, I've been gone a long time), gets a very little way, then randomly crashes again. Is there ANYTHING that I can do? I realize this problem is in the common problems thread, but I just need to know if this is entirely on my end or whether it is something wrong somewhere else.

Preacher,

I am trying to login and i am getting the exact same thing: Initializing Patcher...
And about 5 minutes later, the error comes up with Urulauncher has stopped working.

You are not alone !

There is most certainly a problem with the servers.

I have been online for a few hours. Haven't heard of crashes except the usual "black screen" and Net 6 errors.
Hopefully, it will be working better soon.

Was moving along fine, then got a quick error 16.

Something to do with a funky net connection. Please quit and start again.

Update. Happened again. This time I just hit Esc, and resumed playing.

More update... While I seem to be able to continue IC, I can not run any marker games, and no one seems to be responding to me, so maybe the Esc option doesn't work.

You keep playing, yes, but the connection to the server is lost, so you cannot do anything that requires interaction with the server. In other words: no chat, no marker games, and no linking (among other things).

Chogon is aware of the issues that people are seeing, but the servers are all reporting that everything is hunky dory. I've just logged in myself and had a bit of a run around and didn't experience anything odd; there's maybe close on 20 people in the city right now Confused

I logged my network traffic while I was in and I'm not seeing any evidence of dropped packets or other odd behaviour, so it's a bit of a mystery. Chogon will maybe manage to find some clue in the logs, hopefully.

Adam finished my post. Tho Esc does allow me to continue playing, there is no communication, markers or linking.

FWIW, neither time did this seem preceded by any problems whatsoever. Just bam, Error 16 tombstone.

Could someone tell me what the IP addresses are for the servers the game checks, so I can run a traceroute? or is that something that I shouldn't ask for?

I only know the most rudimentary basics of networking. Would the connection failing make the launcher crash? I wish I still had my Linux machine. I have no idea why this is crashing, all Windows 7 says is that it stopped working. Thank you, Windows, I could see that. What I want to know is WHY it's not working. Sigh.

The IPs are no great secret but it's actually pretty pointless, as a conventional (ICMP) traceroute will fail, because all the routing nodes close to the servers have been configured to simply drop all ICMP echo request packets. That's a fairly common practice for servers these days. You can get tools to do the trace over TCP instead, which will work, but all it really does is give you a snapshot of the ping times to the servers, so not particularly helpful.

I tried logging the traffic with Wireshark last night, but I didn't experience any problems and there were no tell-tale signs like dropped packets or re-transmission requests to hint at the problem.

So far I'm only seeing a handful of people reporting issues, so I've no real feel for how widespread the problem is, if they're all on mainland US, all using the same family of ISPs, all on DSL or all on cable, etc. - makes it harder to figure out if there's a common factor at play.

I'm in Germany and have just had my first ever error 16. Curiously, just before it hit me, one player in the city was openly accusing another of causing such errors simply by being online. Is that possible?
