O_O I wish Myst were nothing more than a game about fantastic fantasy bathrooms... where you got to read a whole library of lore about plumbing to unlock the septic tank of mystery...

O_O Yeah....

o.o I don't know why there are no bathrooms... It's probably because they just used special linking books for that. ...which link to Ages you just don't want to know about.

...or they used chamberpots... I mean...

I wrote this poem back in the day:

The grandeur of the Cavern is astonishing, it's true;
The scenery takes your breath at every turn.
One thinks 'twould be apparent that the proper thing to do
Is to stroll about at leisure, but we learn --

That the normal mode of transport is to run for all you're worth;
With leaps and bounds descend the Staircase Grand.
To flit about in frenzy in this wonder of the Earth;
I must admit I didn't understand.

Until the thought occurred to me, this crowd must be engaged
In a desparate search for something out of sight.
Great Zero markers? Surely not! They almost seemed enraged
As they tore around the Cavern every night.

"Of course, that's it!" I cried at last, returning from a break,
During which I'd paid a visit to the loo.
What else could cause the frenzy but the innocent mistake
Of forgetting D'ni must have toilets, too!

D'ni with no 'dunny!' Oh, it's tragic, but we trust
That nature's call will never heeded be...
For in the lake, for algae's sake, we never, ever must,
Under any circumstances, pee.

This is phenomenal !!! ... This is ingeniously brilliant, Mowog !!! ... Haha ... Very Happy

When I first read this I didn't realize what this beautiful poem was actually really
about, but then, of course, the last lines of those catchy rhymes got me thinking lol ...

In knowing what this special topic was about and already realizing that I might not
have been as immersed into the cavern life as many others lol, I read it again, but
this time starting from the last line, so, from the bottom up to the beginning, verse
by verse ... Then, I finally got it, haha ... and I was amazed about the smartness
and wittiness and I had a good laugh about it ... Thanks, Mowog ... Razz

Why in the world would we need to actually see the bathrooms for them to exist? What is this fascination with wanting to open a door and go 'Oh look, there's the toilet! Finally, we have proof the D'ni had normal biological functions!" Or we stumble across the linking book to the D'ni Compost Age...o.O

There is a difference in perception. You may think that URU is the game, or it is part of the real world.
In the real world want to authenticity. Smile

Wow, I had no idea this would get such a response! I didn't mean that the programmers should waste time making "functioning" wash facilities -- they could've even just shown us the entryway or something. To me, one of the primary selling points of the Myst games is that you really want to be in these places. I remember way back when -- after solving the games of course! -- reading the first-person walkthroughs for Myst and Riven and the person describing how they were living on Myst Island until they heard from Riven again. And also how Atrus, Catherine, Achenar, Sirrus, AND Ti'ana were supposed to be living on the island. And there is nothing on the island for living quarters -- no bedrooms, kitchen, OR bathroom! Yet there is a white marble library... Maybe if Atrus had spent more time tending to the needs of his family, his two sons wouldn't have turned out so screwed up! Razz And I know how silly I am for thinking about this, thank you dear explorers!

On the other hand, now we know why they abandoned Myst Island for Tomahna.

Thanks! Smile

We included my reading of that poem in a couple episodes of "The Cavern Today." It got a good response.

On a related note, years ago my family visited Edgar Allen Poe's home in Baltimore with some friends. Our kids were young at the time, and naturally, no sooner had the tour started than they had to go to the bathroom. So we asked the guide if we could use the restroom, only to learn that the house had none. For me, that went a long way toward explaining Poe's state of mind...

Cheers,

Mowog

As for the Starship Enterprise, some of the tech manuals do show where the bathrooms are.
