I have no idea how old this article is, or whether it has a thread already. It is an Apple Profile on Tim Larkin and his perception of making Myst Music. I was looking for information on throat singers, and found his thoughts very interesting.

Apple Pro Profile: Tim Larkin

I'd say pretty old, since they talk about him using a G4 733 Mac. Still very cool though, I've never seen it before. Tim used to come to the UO hood once in awhile early on in MOUL. Seems like a very cool guy. I remember him talking about how he recorded the sound effects for Eder Tsogal. Unfortunately they were removed later on as I recall to help alleviate lag and crashes in the age. Cool shots of Gahreesen and Teledahn in the piece. Smile

Ah. I thought it seemed old-er. Old, but still useful and interesting.

And I found information on throat singers. Smile

Do a Google search for Tuvan (sp?) throat singers. They can do amazing things with their voices.

That is a fascinating piece! Excellent find! I greatly admire talented audio work in video games and Cyan and the Myst games have had some of the best in the business! It is exciting to hear about his work process in such considerable detail Very Happy

I envy those who have spoken of having met or conversed with Mr. Larkin in URU or in person and those who worked with Cyan developing URU are most fortunate. Cool It must have been a thrilling experience working on URU.

I found Mr. Larkin's take on transparency of audio in films and games to be most interesting. The audio shouldn't be jarring, it should blend seamlessly with the rest of the experience, but I'm with him when he says if audiences aren't supposed to notice it then why bother? Razz

His work certainly captured my attention. Cool

From what I understand, it is a method of chanting/singing in which the sound is controlled in the throat to produce more than one overtone -- apparently the human voice can produce more than one pitch at a time.

Some of the URU soundtrack consists of throat singing. "The Bahro" is a track that shows it fairly clearly.

Or, more likely, that's there to make sure the browser doesn't cache it so it always retrieves a new version.

That is the most instruments I've ever seen with throat singing. I usually see it in this form, being from Canada. Smile

And since they are so unusually close to each other, quite often they'll crack up at some point.
