That shouldn't be too hard. Razz

Some cohesion across shards, such as communication across shards or seamless linking between shards instead of having to log out of one and into another is certainly more ideal than a single shard. a single shard would be problematic (when the question of ownership comes about) not to mention impossible because people will run their own shards anyway.

but this discussion is veering far off topic and has been/probably should be discussed in another thread... at least that's what a moderator is likely to say.

I haven't yet cleared Gahreesen in the other shard(s) yet, but it's been on my to do list now that the wall is being patched up! Many things in Myst Online I waited so long to see, MO being one of those things in and of itself. Climbing the wall is the last thing on my to do list so it's great that it is being made possible for those who never had the chance before!

What's a shard anyway?

According to The Canadian Oxford Dictionary 2001 Edition, it's...

1) a broken piece of pottery...(hmm I'll go to the next one Laughing )

2) equals Potsherd ( Confused ) (Ok, if they say so)

3) a remnant or fragment of something shattered, split, borken (Don't go there some of you that would be heavily tempted Wink )

4) the wing-case of a beetle (Is URU a beetle? Laughing )

Conclusion: Canadians live near Santa Claus in a frozen places called igloos. They don't have access to Internet. We still transmit telegrams when the temperature is above -10 degrees celsius Laughing

In online communities, it's any server dedicated for a MMORPG such as for URU: MOULa (it's a shard), TOC MOUL, Minkata Test Shard, gehn 3.0 & some others that aren't authorised.

I don't see any issue with having many shards. Some say: "it's splitting the community". Nah!

What's splitting the community is the increasing griefing that is occuring on MOULa shard. I don't go anymore in public Ae'gura and if I have to...guess what? I encounter griefers. THEY ARE THE BACTERIAS not shards!

What was the subject of this thread again? Maintainers' Wall isn't it? Wink

I think we should get back on track with the Wall instead of pounding if shards are good or evil.

The Wall has been fixed on URU:CC environment.

The Wall is supposedly fixed on MOUL environment and we should see the result on a MOSS shard (TOC) in March 2012. Just let's hope we will effectively be able to play in a MOUL environment on the Wall.

From what I understand is that some improvements by H.uru team has made their way into TOC. Some of UO made their way into TOC. Some of H.uru made their way to Minkata (and MOULa after). I think we are foreseeing a greater future and we should stop collectively to look in the past "Grandeur".

The game has been released back in 2003 has been improved for couple of years then all developments have been halted for whatever reason that we all know or we don't really need to know. Now since June 2011, we see improvements. We can't say: "All goes well and the world is full of flowers and nice little butterflies", but we see some cooperation between teams even if some would say: "There's some disagreements"...Sure but that's not different that the real life!

That's my pile of 2 cents Laughing

It was certainly never possible in Prologue. Atrus, Katran and Achenar were closed systems.

I concur. That's how I remember it.

At one point in time a cross-shard communication feature was discussed for Open Uru. The idea was it would allow Greeters to work on multiple shards.

Until we get the Cyan content licensing worked out cross-shard communications is way less interesting than having a working Wall.

Once the wall works we can get to the Maintainer's suites. Cool

Perhaps your right, but without darkness their can be no light.

Very Happy Confused Evil or Very Mad

Any Way I believe more Progress is being made on the Wall as far as availability is concerned, although I don't think its ready for MOULa just as yet. But we do have our hopes up.

I never knew that.... I love kicking leaves

The leaves are weird. The colliders for them are built like oblong hockey pucks, and are very thin. I believe the issue is that the avatar tends to just step over them instead of bumping in to them. More science is needed, and hopefully we'll have them behaving properly in the not-so-distant future

I miss kicking those leaves. We lost it when the Havok physics engine was replaced with PhysX.

Unfortunately, the way the PhysX character controllers work, the leaves will never work properly in PhysX.

Maybe in bullet when we resurrect dynamic-actor character controllers.

As the original poster on this thread, I just wanted to check in and thank you for all the comments and discussion! This has been very interesting, and has got me itching to try some of the shards.

I look forward to finally seeing the wall function as I began with Uru after the closing of the first "Uru:Live" and never got involved until MOUL came about on the online environment.

On the issue of shards (note: I am not a programmer hence why I ask if it's possible), is it possible in the future to unite the shard public areas so that users from one shard can seemlessly visit and communicate with other shards? (Neighborhood instances could become neighborhood shard instances with a universal public instance area with resources load balanced across the various shard servers) A player would login through their favorite shard and be able to connect to other shard instances through the nexus. Just an idea, but I remember when open source was first announced that that would have been the plan so that cyan could simply host the main vault DB.

Under this idea, the public instance of the city would be the same public City instance no matter which shard you logged in through.
