Not sure if anyone has posted this, but a friend just showed me this trailer of a brand new, experimental game that just came out. Apparently it reminds a lot of people of Myst, and I can easily say I can see why.

As far as I know, there are no puzzles, no guns, no main path that you need to take, just the environment around you and a voice over that narrates a letter to you over four chapters as you navigate throughout the world.

It's a shame that my PC decided to die, though I seriously doubt it would be able to support this world in its detail.

Available for PC on Steam.

I just completed it and was about to post about it but you beat me to it Razz I was totally floored by some of the environments. The caves especially were particularly breathtaking. It's true that there's no puzzles or dangers of any kind. It's kind of unfair to even refer to this as a game. I think of it more like a painting that you get to explore in gorgeous detail. The narrative is sparing but thought provoking and works very well with the visuals. I love this sort of thing and while I've only played through it once so far it's definitely something I'll return to probably many times. Absolutely astounding.

That is absolutely mind-blowing and just overwhelmingly amazing!!! ... Razz

The impressive landscapes and all those mysterious and magical
environments and just the whole scenery and ambience are of such
an extraordinary gorgeous beauty, that is almost unbelievable ... And
not to forget the awesome atmospheric music along that thrilling journey ...

Official site ... Their 'Media' picture gallery - HQ big screens ... On Steam ...

Jessica Curry (music composer) ...

The Chinese Room (developers), also look into their projects in development ...

Thanks, alswaiter (and Loshem for the intent Wink ), for pointing us, the one's not being updated
on new Steam contents, to this extraordinary gem ... I believe I'll look deeper into this on Wednesday ... Very Happy

My ANCIENT Athlon 64X2 3GHz ran it very smoothly, no hiccups at all.
But I am running under a Win7 64-bit OS, so the Source engine may be taking advantage of that, I don't know.

I can tell you that I was VERY impressed with the capacity of Source to render huge numbers of polygons with lots of animation, very complex texturing and interactive lighting.
The developers really know how to use the engine well...but then they've been working on this project since 2008! :^)

Well now that I have seen the specs for it, looks like it would have been able to handle it, though I doubt it would have looked as awesome as in the trailer. My graphics card is about as old as yours: GeForce 6800 128mb.

This game looks amazing! Too bad it's so short... but I'm going to try it out anyway. Great find!

Yes, running around in those caves is absolutly amazing. Being a coin collector, I especially liked the cave that had all those ancient silver coins spread all over the bottom - people were obviously using the cave top as a wishing well. Yeah...all through the game I was halfway expecting Atrus to pop out from behind a tree or something: "Ah my friend, you have come at last..." Laughing

I definitely have to get it. I saw IGN's review a couple of weeks ago and I was sold. Now it's in my wishlist...

I just completed Dear Esther in one (rather long) sitting.

My. Goodness.

While it might not appeal to a mainstream gamer, it certainly enthralled this explorer, and I couldn't let myself stop until I'd completed the journey. Esther provided a thoroughly wonderful evening, and I hope to revisit it on occasion. Imagine Myst without the interactions... just the environments and an unfolding story, and you've got Dear Esther. Except those environments are incredibly lush, and the underground segments are breathtaking. Seriously breathtaking.

Thanks for the original post! Earlier this evening I'd never heard of Esther, and now I've finished it, much to my enjoyment.

Cheers,

Mowog

Yes, this is what I'm talking about!

Dear Esther is an example of the kind of material and creativity that I was hoping to see would be coming out of the OpenURU shards. It represents, I think, an inspiration to pursue that level of quality in fan-created Ages that would offer a dynamic and successful future for MO:ULa. I look forward to seeing work like this from our open source URU community.

What do you think about renaming Myst V End of Ages, "Dear Esher"? Smile

Oh, by the way...
I'm sorry that I forgot to add this:

Dear Esther is beautiful, but don't rush right out and send in your money without careful research.

It wont run well on many common graphics chipsets, and not at all on plenty. There are lots of crashing problems from users. This is a sneaky little secret evidently well-kept by the makers. If you send the money, and you cannot run the game, forget it. They will not respond to complaints, and they offer plenty of arrogant little insults to non-geeks on the forums about how it's just too bad that your pc simply isn't good enough. Send your ten bucks in for a MO:ULa donation instead. You'll enjoy the game and rest assured that your payment didn't simply buy a pizza for a couple of guys in England.
