The Raspberry Pi is a miniature computer costing only 35$ (for Model B, the most advanced of the two models) and made to run Linux. It is extremely tiny, and yet capable of decoding 1080p high-definition video. The Model B has 256 Mb or RAM, a 700Mhz processor and an Ethernet port. I've been dabbling in MOSS and CWE recently, so I was wondering if this little beauty could be capable of running a MOSS/DIRTSAND server on its tiny system.

Does anybody know the system requirements for either server, and if it could be made to work on this gizmo? The community could then build custom SD card images that you would just download and insert into this fully functional computer. You could literally just plug-and-play and have an entire server ready for you, pre-configured and all.

I think it could work, for a smallish shard. The database would be happier with more RAM, but otherwise URU servers are pretty lightweight.

Heh! It's a moot question at this particular moment, because the initial stocks have sold out Razz

I was thinking along similar lines, but not for an Uru server. What you might want to consider is that this doesn't have a hard disk interface - you either have the use the SD card that the Debian Linux lives on or attach a USB drive. I reckon that's still viable. I don't know if I've still got any of the information, but I think the original MOSS test shard that a'moaca' set up used a pretty old and low powered PC, so implementing MOSS on it might be possible.

Edit: Somewhere today I read that it was Fedora that came with this, but looking at the documentation it's Debian

A medium-sized SD card should be more than enough to hold a shard. Assuming you're serving the datafiles, the shard data and server are probably about 2GB. The database size will depend largely on how many users you have, but shouldn't be very large.

I think a full shard setup could easily be shipped on a "plug and play" SD card image. It'd be a biggish image, but nothing you couldn't pull down if you have decent broadband. As a torrent it would be no problem whatsoever.
