tommyap - that post on the OU forums refers to logging in to the forums - Is that what you're experiencing too or are you referring to MOULa?

In either case, there's no reason I can think of why this would happen Confused

(Split this into it's own topic - it's not one of the "common problems")

As I said, there's no reason I can see why anyone should have difficulty logging in to the forums. Registering a new account can be problematic due to the emailer issues, and similarly requesting a password reset or trying to change the email address associated with your forum account can leave you with your account deactivated, due to not getting the verification email Confused .

You seem to suggest that this is a problem that can run on for several days at a time? What actually happens - can you see the forums OK, but just can't get your login accepted or is it something else?

Most commonly what happenes is , first my browsers can not find the forums . After several tries eventually (sometimes)one does find the forums , but the page does not load properly and i am not logged in automaticly. When i try to log in ... browser can not find the adress , back to square one . When i can log in (rare) the page does not load properly or i am back being not logged in . When i am actualy logged in (even more rare) i can not go any further then that page , browser can not find the adress etc . If a link does work (extremely rare) i am back being not logged in , and can not go any further etcetera etcetera . I would asume this is a common connection/traffic problem if it did not last for at least a full week to up to two weeks and a half every time and pops up every couple of months , the same happenes with Cyan's site at the same time . No other sites , favorites or not are affected . During that time i can not post on any topic . Then , out of the blue everything is working normal again .. for a time . I realise that my problem is not identical to the one i am referring to Rolling Eyes

I would look to DNS problems. If you are on a Mac it is common for them to have such problems. On a Windows system it tends to be more of an ISP problem.

I see lots of this in Second Life. Enough so that I wrote up Troubleshoot your SL Connection. Whether it is a web site, Uru, or SL you are having problems connecting to the steps in the article will help you find the problem. Of course the SL specific stuff is meaningless for your use.

If you are on Windows, you could write IP addresses in for the MOUL forum and other sites you have problems with into the HOSTS file. If it is a DNS problem in your computer or from your ISP, that should fix it. Of course if they change addresses at some point you won't be able to get to the sites and remembering that you have HOSTS changes is not likely. So, it can be a gotcha at some point.

If you leave the computer on 24x7, you might try clearing your DNS cache.

If you suspect an ISP problem, switch to Google DNS servers. Google has good instructions on how to do that. They have left out the advice to keep at least one of your ISP's DNS servers in your settings. Some ISP's have special values in their DNS for mail servers and support services for their subscribers.

I'm also inclined to suspect a DNS/routing issue - both mystonline.com and cyanworlds.com are on the same IP address, so if the route to one is lost then the other will almost certainly go too.

The issue where page loading is erratic is one I've seen before (on my office PC): What would happen is that for a handful of sites a page may or may not load; if it does load then some graphic elements might be missing or one or more of the stylesheets don't load. What we eventually found was that our proxy to the external internet used a number of machines to balance out the load and on one the DNS was misconfigured (or corrupt), so depending on which machine your request got routed through (essentially random) the request might fail. Even on the "bad" machine, the DNS was OK for the majority of sites, so many people never saw a problem at all.

So, if I were to make a guess, I'd suggest something similar is happening at your ISP, although the fact that it's happening regularly is odd. I can see it "repairing" itself if the DNSs get restarted, but not so much why it goes bad again quickly only ever affects these site. DNS cache poisoning? Dunno.

I would guess since Tommyap is coming to the site from the Netherlands it is a cache problem somewhere between his computer and the MOUL site. Either a page cache or a DNS cache somewhere is having a problem. Once the data in the cache times out, things would repair. Why they get messed up I don't understand.

I would take it up with the ISP on Tommyap's end.

Well, there is that nasty piece of malware called DNS Changer out there. I'm not sure it could be responsible though since all the rogue DNS servers were shutdown and the bad guys arrested. Infected systems could be trying to reach one of those servers... the result might be no or very poor internet access. Unfortunately, this is a rootkit and is not removeable by ordinary virus scanners.
