Hey Folks

I've been floating this around to various people, but I thought I would post it here because I think Myst fans will generate an interesting discussion on the topic. I'm compiling a loooong list of inspiration sources from all media, and I want to get input from as many different people as I can. So what I want from you is anything you can think of that could inspire cool ideas or art or what-have-you. For instance:

interesting/oddball/remarkable games from any era/platform
books, short stories, comics, poems, sidewalk chalk
movies, TV episodes, youtube videos
songs, scores, whole albums
etc ... anything that is remarkable or interesting to you. The less well known, the better!

Like I said, I'm posting it here because I think we Myst fans are a diverse group with many different backgrounds who can come up with an interesting list (and I imagine people will have fun seeing and discussing the suggestions of others). In the interest of disclosure though, I will say that I am doing this in my capacity as an indie game dev, and will be using this list to help provide inspiration for our next game (yes, sometimes indies get to spend a week being paid to play games and read books instead of making games. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it Wink ).

To start us off, here are a few from me, in no real order:
This game
Ficciones
Homeworld
Myst (of course)
Old Man's War
Psychonauts
Portal
Antichamber
The Forever War

So have at it, what inspires you?

Cool! Cool

Suggestion: change "Myst" to "Myst/Uru series." Smile

Okay, here's a link to something I've been sharing with all my friends: Bryson Andres uses his electric violin and a loop pedal to perform a stunning rendition of OneRepublic’s “Secrets” on the streets of Spokane, WA. It's not the song in particular (original version by One Republic) although it's great. And, it's not just the musician's style (more by Bryson Andres), although that's exciting in itself. But, one cold day on a street corner in Spokane ( Very Happy ), both came together in a perfect moment (IMO) and it touched me deeply.

Yeah, you never know what you'll find playing on the street...

I'm excited by the unexpected, when things happen in ways that are so very different, and waaay better, than what you'd imagined. Like when the elementary school spring recital takes a bit of a twist...

This is what happens when people are passionate about what they do and enjoy. A few years ago, a software engineer at Cisco quit her job to perform her music. That took guts. That's what inspires me.

Inspiration from media comes from a wide variety of places. I'd also say that the Myst series and the Portal series have had a profound inspiration on my personal creativity in general. Here's a few more pieces of media that have inspired my thinking into a wide variety of things, as varied as comedy to philosophy.

Books

The Hunger Games Series (The stories we're told here are cautionary. The author also shows us how to write a compelling villain, and takes any and all violent aspects of the story with a grain of salt.)

Sherlock Holmes (He makes you think! And even then, you're usually still wrong!) Very Happy

Les Miserables (A great book; a true epic classic that explores the deep aspects of what makes us human, and also takes a profound look into the attributes of the human soul.)

A Christmas Carol (My personal favorite redemption story. Everyone can relate to it because everyman needs redemption at some point in their life. Plus, it's always heartening to see Scrooge become a good man again.)

The Bible (I know it's a religious book, but it's also the most inspiring book in human history. Regardless of your faith, it's a book that should be read. It contains the stories of old, and give us insight into how ancient peoples thought about life (and the afterlife.) I've personally been inspired by it, both on spiritual and mental levels.)

Movies

Young Frankenstein (BEST. PARODY/COMEDY. EVER. Plus it has Gene Wilder in it. In terms of inspiration, it gives you a greater appreciation for that kind of comedy and the films of old that it parodies.)

King Kong (2005 version) (Peter Jackson did a great thing when he made this movie. It's a true cinematic epic, and an excellent Beauty and The Beast story.)

Planet of The Apes (The original classic version. I actually "can't" tell you "why" you need to see it, but you'll know when you get to the end. One of the best endings in any form of media ever.)

Back to The Future (Nuff said. You're brain will be swimming with paradox scenarios for weeks afterward.)

TV

Firefly (Once you watch it, you'll understand. A profound look at what the old west would have been if space travel had existed.)

Star Trek (Any and all versions and series. I don't think I need to say why it should be watched; if you're a Myst fan you know why.) Wink

Wow!!! This is all very inspiring!!! ... Razz

I'm inspired by so many people and happenings which are coming to me in
one way or the other almost every day ... I must admit I'm not very inspired
by many computer games except the Uru/Myst/Riven worlds lol ...

So, when I saw your contributions here I was glad to see the range of them
broadened in a wonderful way ... Yeah, where to start, and when I thought
about it the first that came to my mind was this and maybe it comprises
and touches on almost everything I can be inspired by ... Very Happy

I guess I should have added this:

Super Metroid (The ending says it all; but for a game to build up to an unexpected ending like it did speaks volumes as well. I consider it a true masterpiece.)
