Okay, just for fun (and maybe to help Cyan a bit)… Back in May when Rand was so nice to come answer our questions, he said this in response to the question of whether or not Cyan was considering trying a Kickstarter project:

Quote:

We have. We've gotten so much feedback from fans and friends encouraging us to do it. We've really got only two issues…
• First - what product to propose (it's between two - one Myst related and one completely new ...
• Second - we need to get enough money from RealMyst to fund a good Kickstarter proposal with some great artwork and a convincing video.

So, assuming Cyan makes enough money with RealMyst to fund a Kickstarter proposal, which of the two projects that Rand mentioned would you prefer to see?

My heart says the Myst related game of course, but my head says the non-Myst game might be a better choice in terms of garnering a broader-based fan support. I'm sure whatever proposal they present will be amazing and have me whipping out my credit card fast enough to produce a sonic boom.

Who knows, maybe they'll try pitching LATUS.
We can only hope... Very Happy

That's my hope as well.

That is really a difficult question. I think we all would love to see more from the Myst universe but at this stage it is probably more important that Cyan become fresh and new and relevant again. I want to say "both" but the question at this point really should be what do you think will be the most succesful. Sadly sometimes income needs to be put before art or art cannot be created.

My heart wants a new Myst... Where I'll be able to walk in Releeshahn, see D'nis and talk with them, meet Yeesha's daughter (living in peace)...

My soul say "not a puzzle game" (not a myst-like)... Because the newest players seems to not like puzzles and the idea is to have a lot of players...

So... I think there's a possibility to mix that.

A "no puzzles" game, from the Myst story...
Example: "Myst VI: So Far Away From Myst"

Or a game that isn't from the Myst saga...
Example: "(*): So far away from Myst..."

(*) Here, the game's name.

Don't forget… Next year is the 20th anniversary of Myst. So they might be able to make some kind of splash by pitching something Myst-related due out next year.

But I'd love to see them pitch LATUS, too…

IMO, Myst is done. Riven was a great ending. Then we got more, and Myst 5 ended things quite finally.

Uru was a great place to tell stories beyond Myst, but that's not going to happen.

I'd rather them start over with something new and exciting and push the envelope again than retread an old and creaky franchise just because it's the easy thing to do.

Yes, I'd put my hopes there.

As much as I like Myst, I have to say it's time for something new, maybe a nice Sci-Fi.

Me too. Even if they only had a Kickstarter that's half as successful as Double Fine's then they would still have quite a bit of financial leeway for the project. Just as long as they don't pull another Uru... but gaming, and Cyan, has come a long way since then.

I'm unsure here because we have no real details on either project, except that one project is Myst-related and one isn't.
That by itself is not enough information for us to make an informed decision.

I'm kind of thinking that Cyan Worlds should pitch whichever one they think is a better, more promising project.

If the non-Myst project is something really cool and creative (like the 'butterfly effect' idea in LATUS, which could be amazing if done well) that could get people excited, then they should pitch the non-Myst project.

On the other hand, maybe their Myst-related idea is a really clever, interesting and refreshing variation on the Myst formula, and the 'original' idea they are considering is in line with the often underwhelming string of non-Myst-related titles Cyan Worlds has been releasing lately. (i.e. games like Hex Isle or Stoneship)

Cyan Worlds should take a long, honest look at the two ideas they are thinking about pitching, and ask themselves, "Which of these is a more compelling game?" and pitch that one - whichever one it is - first, holding the other design in reserve for later.

It's a really tough call, just on principle. The Myst brand still has the power to sell more than an unknown entity, but between effectively five sequels and uncountable ports and remakes it's definitely brand that the mainstream gaming universe has sort of gotten tired of, in my perception. I think for this to work (especially as a kickstarter), they have to have a project that uses the name Myst to get people's attention, and then when it has their attention, it has to instantly assure them that it's not another port or re-hash.

I agree with this as well.
