GOG.com will be putting game against game in a head to head match up - decided by fan votes. Who's fans can vote the most? Which game's fans will reign supreme?

First up on Monday 18, 2012 is two classic adventure games. One seems timid and shy but careful it will outwit you with a left hook out of nowhere. The other is dark and edgy and packs a punch.

It's Myst vs. 7th Guest

Let the battle begin! (on Monday at http://www.gog.com/news/battle_of_the_games_round_1_myst_vs_the_7th_guest )

Where to vote: http://www.gog.com/en/page/2012_summer_promo

Votes? Fan votes are no way to decide something like this. The only proper way to solve a debate like this is with an epic rap battle.

7th Guest is too creepy.

The guys who designed it had...skeletons in the closet and "spider in the attic" let me tell you!!!

"spider in the attic" is a calque of "Des araignées au plafond" meaning having a loosy screw or two or more inside the brain Laughing

And the "humour" wasn't even funny!

What do you think I will vote for? Wink

I didn't MIND 7th Guest. It was an ok game. The problem though is it was, like many of the 'adventure' games of that time, a collection of puzzles. I mean, seriously, the entire 'mansion' was a framing device for the puzzles. (The ultimate I can think of was one I played called Jewels of the Oracle which was a bunch of puzzles with prerendered 3d paths between and some ending CGI that made no sense. No story to it aside from 'you're here, solve these puzzles). The biggest difference between most of those and 7th Guest is they had the story and the live-action bits, which were rather decent.
Myst however didn't do that, it had the entire world as the puzzle, with everything part. There were puzzles, but it wasn't like Atrus locked his library door with a Towers of Hanoi or something.

Some games took that from Myst, but sadly a lot of people missed the point and figured it was just 3d first person view with puzzles put in that was the whole lure. Rolling Eyes

If we're taking a show of hands, I also never finished The 7th Guest. I bought a collection of the puzzles from 7th Guest and 11th Hour (both by Trilobyte) as a stand-alone pack, and never finished those either. Every few years I go back and get stuck on the same difficult levels. And yet, I *do* go back to them, as they have an enjoyable mechanism as far as puzzles go.

I didn't see a link for this showdown from the GoG home page. Do I need to be logged in to see it, and to vote? I would definitely choose Myst if given the choice.

There actually was a story to JotO. While it was not essential to gameplay, without it the ending would be cryptic at best. The sequel was the one I felt ignored plot in favor of being a pure puzzle game. They added the ability to warp directly to puzzles, bypassing the need to walk around and explore freely. The budget re-release of the original JotO is even more disappointing in that any sense of exploration is gone. Warping is the only means of movement, and any hidden items are automatically "discovered" when you enter a puzzle room. Sadly, it seems the only copies of JotO available are the gimped version.

I found the website for JotO's programmer the other day. For anyone who wants a nostalgia trip, some of the puzzles have been ported to Flash and are playable online: http://www.lowkemedia.com/projects.html

By the way, did anyone else encounter a "quern" for the first time playing JotO?

For all I know I got the gimped version. I got it for a present years and years back, played it, passed it.

I don't remember a thing, except that one 'puzzle' was mankala. Just.. mankala.

I don't have much respect for that sort of game, sorry. It's ODD though. It's probably hate because it was promoted as an adventure game. If it was promoted as a puzzle game with connection I'd give it more slack. I love the Layton series, myself and have passed all 4 of them so far (and don't plan to get a 3ds so will never play any more it seems) and yet they're nothing more than puzzle games... except puzzle games with a good mystery behind them, and some of the best art and music and voice acting and animation out there. Yet 7th Guest which is a puzzle game with some good voice acting and acting, nice graphics (for the time), good animation, catchy bits of music... still doesn't get the same reaction.

Maybe it's a platform thing? It's weird.
