A miniseries would be much more appropriate for adaptation than a feature film.

Actually, I like the idea of a miniseries better than a movie. Those allow for more detail. I keep hoping they will eventually do Steven King's Gunslinger series that way.

There were actually discussions for a Myst miniseries on the SciFi channel at one point. (Back when they knew how to spell it properly.)

Unfortunately, that never actually happened. I agree that it would be a good way to go, though.

I would probably be happy with either if they, and I can't stress this enough, STAY TRUE TO THE MATERIAL!!! This has been the biggest problem of so many of these adaptations.

Either a movie or a miniseries would have their pros and cons. A movie might be shorter, but you get a much bigger budget, and there is always the possibility of a sequel or two. A miniseries might allow for more detail, but you won't have the budget for the best actors and directors. Plus, there is little chance of it going beyond that.

That's not necessarily true anymore with the rise of the Cable Studios.

And there are a good deal of cable series that end up only 8 episodes or so... but get repeat seasons. So what might not necessarily be a 'miniseries' per se, could be short enough to be pretty impressive, with a limited budget. And come back in a year....

And there are new innovations all the time... 'Sanctuary' started out as a webseries, and made heavy use of a greenscreen effect to cut costs on sets, etc... it still used the greenscreen when it ended up a regular series on Syfy... didn't look too bad, in my opinion. Gave the show a distinctive, unreal quality that could work well in a "Myst universe..."

It wouldn't be TOO hard to create a show with similar techniques as, say, the cutscenes in Myst 4.

I'm not saying that it wouldn't be great as a miniseries or some other type of show. I'm just saying that there are unique challenges involved in whatever they decide to do. Although Adrian and Patrick always had their hearts set on a big-budget Hollywood film.

I actually think most of the great storytelling in visual media is happening on TV and the web (and comics. Let's not forget comics). It's not so much in the theaters anymore (which is why I don't see that many movies, but watch lots of TV).

I can actually see Myst ending up as a Game of Thrones type adaptation. You have three seasons already set up with the books, and if you add in content from the games, and the ever elusive BoM, they you have at least 4 or 5 seasons right there. It wouldn't be a traditional structure, because you bounce around chronologically a bit, but it would be doable.

The one story that I want so be told is the story of the Ronay. The discovery of the Art, and the eventual evacuation of Garternay, and then establishment on Earth. I personally, think this was an excellent place to start (at least story-wise) for any Myst adaptation. It's only issue is it's so far removed from Myst the game.

Maybe you could tell that story as 'flashbacks' from journals or something throughout the episodes? Or maybe as one of Anna's stories for Atrus?

Yes, I remember when they first posted that on the Mystmovie.com site. I thought it was extremely cool to see the Cyan headquarters.
