Post Posted: Tue Nov 07, 2006 12:27 pm — Post subject: Will URU be suited for newbies?

Hello everyone,
(please note this is a long thread and i ask that you read the whole post before submitting your response)

This is my first post at this forum. Here is a little bit about how i found you guys.
For the past year in my online gaming experience i have become bored with the first person shot em ups like Anarchy online and i dispise mindless gringing to level like World of Warcraft. Tonight i visited a website based on up to date MMORPG information and some how come across a game called Myst:URU Live.

I read many articles on the previous myst games, read reviews, seen screenshots and browsed through this forum. I am very excited about this game...BUT...the thing is i have never played a myst game before.
I dont know if i have what it takes to play this game, the closest game i have played to this is neopets.

Basically neopets is a site where you look after and raise a pet. Sometimes they hold events such as puzzle plots where you have to do steps in a certain sequence or talk to a particualr person to unlock the next part of the chapter. At the end of the event prizes and trophies are received and people can see your achievements by looking at your lookup (a page for displaying all you achievements such as trophies, avatars and pets)

Now i absolutley loved these events and would spend hours working them out or if i ever got stuck there was a great community forum that would help you along, here are my questions:

1.If i was to step into this game will i get stuck because i dont know the back story of the myst plot?
2. Will i be at a disadvantage because i havent made myst friends like most people here have previously?
3. Will there be a display of some kind in the game that will show all our achievements?

Thanks for your time and reading through this very long post. I hope to meet alot of players and become accepted as a friend to you all.

Lynka, I don't think you'll have much trouble. Yes, those of us who have played "Myst" and the other games have something of an advantage, but you'll still be able to work out the puzzles because they don't depend upon knowing the story.

Besides that, if you do get stuck you'll have people available to answer your questions. Many of the puzzles in Uru were designed to be solved by a team, but were redesigned when Live was terminated. I'm hoping that New Live will bring back team puzzle solving of new puzzles.

If you want to get a taste of what it's like, find a used copy of "Myst" someplace. You can also visit http://www.dpwr.net/ to read up on the background. That site will explain everything, so if you like surprises play the games first.

And in fact, the story of Uru is spearate storyline which will grow as time goes on. We might know a little bit more about the world and universe you are about to join, but that shouldn't impede your progress in the game.

Also, I'd like to add that this is a great community. When you enter Uru Live and find people, they're very helpful. The first time I entered, well, I had played the other games before, but these new people were right there and ready to give me a hand at getting used to my new environment. (In case you didn't know, I'm talking about a little online thing called Until Uru where people could use some of the currently released Uru content to come together.) I think you'll be a great addition to our family, Lynka.

You do not have to have played any of the other games to enjoy Uru Live - not at all. As for story, sure there is background, and people enjoy delving into it, but you don't need to know a lot to enjoy the game. Think "ancient ruined city discovered" and "we want to explore and possibly populate it" and "there are factions", and "are those people who founded it really gone?". There, in the proverbial nutshell, you have it.
Uru Live will be, in my opinion, all about your experience of "being there" in the game.

When Uru Live becomes, well "live" - I think there will be a whole bunch of new people coming on board, people who have never played the Myst series.

We welcome you.

To answer all your questions...

First, You shouldn't be at any disadvantage at all. The Myst story is usually divulged somewhere in the game through a journal or something. All the information you need to play Uru is provided within Uru itself. The only thing you need is an imagination and a computer.

Second, while knowing people can help within the game, meeting people is part of the fun too!

Third, our progress is kept track of through several in-game sources. I don't want to divulge those sources because part of the fun of a Myst game is discovery. Just rest assured that there are ways in place already to help you keep track of where you are, and what you've done.

As was stated, Uru gives you the feeling of really being there. So no previous Myst experience is necessary. I hope to meet you in the cavern!

While the Myst story will be beneficial when coming to understand the overarching story, you might actually have an advantage over the rest of us in enjoying it, because you won't start off with a bias towards certain characters. And if you ever need help, you can ask just about anyone and they'll be happy to help.

Hey guys,
Thanks so much for your warm and kind responses.
I am confident enough to try the beta when it becomes open and hopefully that leads to buying the game.
I hope to have adventures with you all in the game.
Thank you for your time.

I think there is one puzzle where those who have certain knowledge gained from previous games have an advantage over those who have never played a Myst game before. Only one puzzle, and the puzzle is solvable in Uru (you just have to be more careful and take more time with looking for hints and deciphering the clues). And that's only 1 puzzle out of the whole game that I've played so far (I've played all of the content that has been previously released).

Sure. Just as people who don't have an internet connection are disadvantaged with offline games when compared with those who have an internet connection (because those that lack one won't be able to go online for help Wink). However that doesn't mean the game will be un-newbie friendly.

Also when Uru Live was originally going to be released, there was a group of people in game dedicated to doing nothing but helping people with solving puzzles. They're called the Guild of Greeters and I very much expect them to resume their activities in Uru Live Smile

Sort of. There is no exact list, but there are a few ways to show people what you've done so far and what you've achieved. If you'd like me to go into more detail just ask Smile

If you're American or Canadian feel free to sign up for gametap where the games Myst, Riven and Exile can be found Smile

Myself, I plan to solve puzzles in Uru and explore areas with my fellow explorers. At first I'll be running through areas I've already played, so I'll do that with people who have already solved those areas. But when it comes to the new stuff, I'll be looking to solve it with people who have never been there before. Whether it's with friends or someone like yourself who I don't know at all, I don't know how picky I'll be Smile So I'll certainly be welcoming to people like yourself. And I doubt I'll be the only one in the community like that Wink

Uru Live isn't like other MMOs. You don't buy any game with Uru Live. What you do is sign up with gametap (if you follow that link you'll be telling gametap that you are signing up mainly for Uru Live) and pay a subscription fee each month. That fee will give you access to lots of games (including Myst, Riven and Myst III: Exile) without you needing to buy anything at a store or paying one cent extra then the subscription fee. If you want an offline game of Uru, then you can buy it somewhere else, but that isn't necessary for Uru Live, and won't communicate with Uru Live at all (you won't get extra content if you buy the offline version. You're saved game from the offline version can't be moved to the online version, etc).

Also Uru Live will be available for free once it launches properly. The disadvantage to it being free is that you are much more limited in what you can do and where you can go, but I imagine it might be a good place for you to check it out if you're still unsure after the beta. The free access is just a trial version for you Wink

Well, as you progress through the game, you will certainly get more Relto Pages, which will be on display, when turned on, in your Relto.

So sortof, yeah.

As a member of the Guild of Greeters, I'd like to clarify this a bit. We are dedicated to helping and Welcoming new explorers and having Fun. In our role of Greeters, we do not take part in the ongoing in cavern story but most are aware of it. Of course when off duty, some are just as likely to become part of the story as anyone else. We are a semi organized group but we are not the only ones who do this. Almost every experienced explorer is willing to help someone new to find their way around, So do not be afraid to just say HI or Help! You may just find you have more help and new friends than you expect.[/b]
