This morning I managed to complete Myst IV: Revelation in just under 49 minutes (timing from the moment the icons appear at the bottom of the screen after starting a new game, to leaving the chair in Serenia's old memory chamber. Arbitrary boundries, yes, but they always are). To my knowledge, Revelation hasn't been speedrun before (I couldn't find anything on YouTube, and speedrun.com doesn't even list the game yet) so that makes it a world record (vacuous though it is). Here's a link to the run for your enjoyment (and as proof!)

congrats, Kath, fun to watch! I must go back and play again - but not a speedrun - I didn't know how much would be missed when you're going for speed! No moving the slider, eh?

Thanks Acorn! In terms of what's missed out... pretty much everything, except those cursed-by-Yahvo unskippable cutscenes. And no, no moving the slider.

I found that trick quite nifty... It's something that suits me

What I don't understand is how you skipped your wind spirit chase and the crazy puzzle with colours also in Serenia (For that one I'm using a "savegame" found on the net to sort of give me a push forward... )

That turns out to be a slight flaw in the game. It turns out that you can actually access the old memory chamber and go to Dream without ever getting a spirit guide. The game doesn't check for it. So long as you have the colour code from Spire, you can get in. Just like how you don't need to complete Haven to be able to unlock Achenar's 'dragon'.

Ahh oh ok, that's a great flaw! :D Next time I'll play Revelation, I'll skip the spirit & spirit chamber parts.

I know you did a speedrun there but from a normal gameplay perspective, I prefer going through Haven. I like the contact with the wildlife (mostly the monkeys). Great video! :)

While Haven is enjoyable, I draw the line at the mangree puzzles. Turning those wheels is perhaps the most stressful part of the game for me.

I never made it past the Mangree puzzle. Someday I should try to finish it.

Personally, I'm doing a lot of savegames enabling me to go through it. The one puzzle I will never like is the 4 crystals in Spire. The first one always stops vibrating before I can make the last one vibrates. It kills me.

I cannot say I enjoy that game much. Too much Ubisoft, not much Cyan in it. Too many French Canadian actresses too. Once you went through a "movie" like "Deux femmes en or", you cannot see an actress like Monique Mercure as one of the pretresses of Selenia. I always end up burst laughing thinking on how low she went for that "masterpiece of cinematography" in 1970...

P.S. : Do you a favour here, do not seek for the movie.

The frequency locks puzzle is one of those that you just have to have a steady hand for, and the patience to practice.

I have to agree that the mangree puzzler is annoying, but the one under Spire is almost impossible if you have any physical impairment (like age) that makes quick accurate movement almost impossible. There really needs to be a geezer mode for some of these games, imnsho ...

We're still waiting on a category on speedrun.com to make these 'official'...

I'll second that geezer mode notion.

Avoiding all the puzzles and ambiance is like playing the original Myst and going straight to the pedestal.....

Not really the point of the experience is it?

However, thanks for the vid, I did watch it and have cured my desire to play that game for at least a year.....

Tell me about it. I've watched the cutscenes so much I've started noticing all the minor details you'd never even realise where there. For example, Yeesha takes her beetle out of Catherine's workroom, after you go in to reset the power.
