Some of you may have noticed the forum is going through some hiccups right now. As you know a large number of invites for the Beta test have been sent today; and as a result an unusually large amount of new people come to the forum, which brings in some of the issues we're having right now.

If you try to make a post or send a PM and you get this error: Failed sending email :: PHP :: DEBUG MODE. Chances are that your post (or PM) has been sent, despite the error. So you do not need to send it several times or you will just end up posting several times the same message.

Grey Dragon and the people at Cyan Worlds are aware of this, and are working hard right now to get the forum back to full speed as soon as possible. Thank you all for your patience while they work this out. Smile

Yes, the error comes from the system (phpBB) trying to send a notification email and failing. Not from the post or PM itself which is successfully saved.

Is this also the reason that I am getting the following white screen just about every time I click on something in the forum - or even try to get into the forum?

Service Temporarily Unavailable - The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again. Rolling Eyes

Yup. If the server gets too overloaded, it just starts denying requests.

If they are having this much trouble since the last beta invite - and they expect even more when beta goes open - what's it going to be like when URU goes Live? Rolling Eyes

There are plans to upgrade the forum server over the weekend, and it was supposed to have started already. I'd guess that there were some technical issues that arose, and things will get taken care of Monday. Until then, all I can do is counsel patience. Things are being scaled up as we go... it's just more cost-effective to run with the hardware you need now as opposed to the hardware you may need 6 months from now at this point. Once we go live, I'd expect there to be considerable room for expansion Smile

The bad news -

We wanted to upgrade the servers this weekend, but that would mean the DNS would propagate and the forum would be down this entire weekend. When comparing having no forum to having a forum giving issues, we decided that forum giving issues would be better because people are still trying to make beta accounts.

This weekend you will get
“Service Temporarily Unavailable - The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again.”

Sorry.

Now I leave on a higher note –

We are stressing servers and testing things. I’m glad we beta tested the forum for usage. We now know what it will be like when we release.

We fixed an issue when people were trying to make a forum account.

Now for the big news, Monday we will be bringing down the forums for a few days to do maintenance and move them to a better server. When they return you should not see the issues that plagued us the last few days.

This is the second (third?) move to a different server. I can't decide whether or not I'd like to see you move it another five or ten times. You know - once every ten or twenty thousand subscribers. Sounds like a positive sort of inconvenience.

It's always cheaper at this point in the game to only use the minimum hardware for the job and grow as necessary... especially when you're in tight financial quarters Wink

I know things are getting a bit frantic, but all in all, things are looking great.

Can't wait to see the improvements that the new servers bring.
