Post Posted: Tue Jul 04, 2006 1:27 am — Post subject: Collective Noun of Uru Players?

Doctor Who Fans have Whovians, Trekkers have Trekkies, Lord of the Rings fans have Ringers and Dungeons and Dragons players have Nerds, so what do we have?

I just read through the Myst 5 Lost Chapters book and I think I've come up with the perfect one - Urutahntee
Uru - Gathering
Urutahn - Gathering-er = Gatherer
Urutahntee - Plural of Gatherer

But I think the proper term of Gatherer would be Uru-rov-tee.
Uru-rov-tee = Gathering People

Yes, I know Uru isn't a Dn'i word, but if we mix it into Dn'i the people who don't know that will think we're awesome Wink

Now I just need to learn how to write it in Dn'i...

Uru is a D'ni word which means Large Gathering.

I have always found Myst Fans works just fine.

I always thought we were nerds too. Confused
Kidding. For one I dislike that term, it's a little pejorative IMHO, and for two it isn't specific to D&D players.

That question has been open for ever and it still hasn't found a decent answer. At some we were MRD people (MystRivenDni) then with Exile we became MRDE. (Though some tried to turn that into MERD, but the association with some french slang word was a bit too close). Then with Uru & Rev acronyms finally became unusuable. So we remain nameless.
Also as Tweek points out Myst fans is good enough. It may lack personality but it's understandable and much better than MRERDU, Mysters or whatever..
(I still find myself using MRD from time to time...)

I've read some people call us.. 'Myst Freaks'. Like we were some sort of sect. Ha, those 'outsiders'... Rolling Eyes

There was a poll about this up on the Myst Worlds site a while back. "Mystics" was winning IIRC, but I only remember two of the options: "Mystics" and "Atrus' Angels." So, don't take this as canon. Wink

I like the term "Myst Freaks" Laughing

What about Uruot?
"Our Gathering"

or Urupahts
"City Gathering"

They sound more like ad slogans...

What about tsoyahr dor-mahdh
"Day of Defeat"

It's fun learning new languages. My Chinese teacher would be porud... If she was a Dn'i teacher...

I'll just use "Uru player" or more globally, "Myst fan". I've always found cutesy one-name monikers for fans to be a little bit awkward.

Personally, I'd rather not be a collective noun. It's too easy to stereotype.

The D’ni considered those beyond the surface as “Ahrotahn” or outsiders.

This could be considered as a derogetory title like "sasenach" a Scots word meaning lowlander.

If we are the "Ahrotahn" we could take the title to ourselves and posess it in the same way the Gay community has repossessed the term "Queer" thereby repressing the negative overtones.

Either way I figured I should throw this one into the pot.

We really should be called the "Gathered" Not the Gatherer... if anyone's the Gatherer, it's Yeesha.

cyanites wouldnt work, to similar to the term cyan folk are called by themselves/community

and it would be Ahrotahntee as there are more than one of us. That said I still think Uru Fans and Myst fans work, unless you like the community cliche.
