Post Posted: Wed Jul 12, 2006 9:37 pm — Post subject: Contradictions in Writing

I was just working in CSS, and I was racking my brains out trying to figure out how to get the page centered in the screen (like the UruLive site). I kept going through for about an hour, until I found the problem. I had a contradiction in my master.css file. One told the margins of the all encoumpasing #page layer to be "auto" away from the edges, thus centering it, but under I had a sub-layer of #page called #content that was postitioned 0px away from the left edge. Once I resolved the contradiction, it worked. This brought to mind... What if a contradiction were to happen with a written world. something so small could bring a world to it's knees.

Thoughts?

Actually, this is kind of scary...

I take my CSS from previous projects (sometimes, if I have the right piece of script) and paste it into another.

Ahh, good old CSS! Which standard are you using? 1 or 2?

That's actually a very good analogy for how contradictions worked their way into Gehn's writings. Much of the training in the Writers' Guild was how to avoid writing contradictions into Ages by accident. (The rest, of course, was learning how do write what you mean with the Gahrohevtee.)

I don't know what standard...

I use quite simple CSS, so I don't think it really makes a difference...

I'd have to ask my Mom. She's the CSS person.

Yeah, it is a good analogy, but having a CSS contradiction is a lot less destructive than a D'ni contradiction.

With a computer program (e.g. CSS) a contradiction would tend to appear as a direct defect - something not working as expected.

However, with the writing of D'ni ages the effects seem to be more holistic. Instead of an immediate defect, a contradiction in the writing would become more apparent over time leading to an unstable age. Sadly, Gehn's solution was to write something to counter the apparent symptom, rather than fix the underlying flaw.

Which makes Catharine's ages, which defied the laws of physics the D'ni relied on when crafting their ages, all the more amazing.

And as for Yeesha, and her apparent abilities - we will just have to see what appears.

Why do I have an image of Atrus sat over a book, looking at Ghens work and going "Damm script kiddie *sigh* I'd better debug this"

Looking at the last few posts, in my mind I am comparing myself to Atrus, trying to fix the Riven book. I have to help my Mom convert a table based site to CSS. Raise your hand if you think this is impossible without re-building the site completely. It uses A LOT of tables...

You can't rebuild the site completely! It'll shift the hyperlink to a whole new website!

Er...I mean...uh...

Yep, Atrus.

Um, no, I actually just finished that sentence. Maybe it should go:

"The sentence you have just begun reading is the one you are about to finish."
