I disagree on the mission statement, though. I do not think it is futile. We have some idea of what our mission is. It's on the flyer. It is, naturally, something we should discuss thoroughly. When we've got a handle on it, we can present it to Cyan and get a yea/nay.

I'm going to go retrieve the flyer and post the contents here, so we can have a good solid discussion of what it all means.

OK, great. And I'll be happy to take a crack at a (very rough) first draft.

We'll let's set up a meeting place and time. As apparently there are many different ideas and thoughts on the subject and there is apparently interest and need.

There already exists a Guild of Maintainers hood. If Cyan needs to change the name, that is fine by me. If there are other hoods with Maintainer names for the same purpose, then we need to know them and make sure everyone gets invited to where-ever and whenever. Some like only one Avatar, some have several.. doesn't matter to me. I don't think you have to be a member necessarily to participate. Just a place to gather certain interests, user games, talk etc.. in specific places to avoid confusion.

I think it is best to hash out a few things in a thread or forum, so that a meeting is more productive such as itinerary of discussions, mission, and preliminary items for voting (if any).

Guild of Maintainers

The Maintainers were the police for anything that had to do with the writing of or the use of Books. A Book could not be used before the approval of the Maintainers. No one considered a link safe until it had received Maintainer approval.

In the future, we hope that the Guild of Maintainers will be the first people into every Age. The Maintainers will test all new areas for stability and functionality and any Age released to the public will require Maintainer approval.

About the Guilds

If you attempted to describe the whole of D'ni society in a single word, one of the words that would immediately come to mind would be "guilds". The 18 major guilds were the backbone of D'ni, their foundation, their decision-making, and their legacy. The structure the guilds provided - making sure that skills and traditions were consistently passed down from generation to generation - is one of the main factors that allowed the D'ni society to exist, largely unchanged, for nearly 10,000 years in the cavern.by the DRC

With the opening of Kirel, the DRC hopes to take the first step towards honoring that legacy. The five guilds represented in Kirel have been carefully chosen by the DRC to represent five areas that will be important for future restoration. The five Guilds represented here will be the first to be fully implemented when that day comes. Until then, read about the Guilds, wear a shirt that represents the guilds, and learn what it means to be part of the Guilds. Find those who are interested in the same Guilds and discuss and imagine what a full Guild system will look like.

We realize that T-shirts and balloons are not anywhere close to the guild systems of the D'ni. We do not pretend that they are. However, they are a step towards the majestic institutions that once ruled the D'ni.

For the "leader" question I think the best idea is, once we're on creating the guild (we're not there yet) , we chose/elect/whatever , some people that will have the charge to coordinate all the stuff, this depending on what need to be done / number of people in the guild etc...

But the first point would be to define exactly, in OCC terms, what will the maintainer do.

My analysis of the flyer:

1) It sure sounds like a recruitment ad for Rehearsal players. But since those hard-working Rehearsal people can't talk about Rehearsal, let's assume that it's not.

2) If it's not Rehearsal stuff, what is this whole new Ages business? My guess: user-created content, same as Guild of Writers. Testing new Ages, making sure new content is safe and usable.

This is a very limited, narrow interpretation of what the flyer says. I suspect that additional inspection jobs could be included in the general Maintainer arena -- testing of user-created objects and additional functionality, perhaps.

One of the things that could happen is that it could also include testing of user-created add-ons to existing Ages. I don't know if that's even possible, but it'd be cool.

Of the five Guilds, this one actually strikes me as the most Out-Of-Character. There are some things that can be done with it In-Character, but some of that would require special permissions from Cyan, which I don't believe we'll get. (Hence the emphasis on user-created content.)

One of the things that strikes me is the following: "any Age released to the public will require Maintainer approval. "

Will the Maintainers be approving Cyan's Ages as well as user-created Ages? If so, how?

The DRC should probably be considered the "Maintainers Guild" for approving release of Cyan ages. That's what they do now as evident on the DRC website.

The Maintainers Guild, as an IC entity of explorers, appears restricted to User Created Content unless they can get a seat in the DRC.

Technically speaking, anything put on live have to be bug free, else, there's risks that the live server crash.

Though, "Bug free" in OCC, might not necessarily mean "safe" in IC terms.

Haha. Something to work for, perhaps. Wink

In all seriousness, though ... yes, it does seem pretty explicitly restricted to testing user-created content. There doesn't seem to be much else involved in the flyer's description.

The thing I see at this moment is that if all the Maintainers are to do is to work on user content, then there's nothing much for the Maintainers to do (besides organize) until the Guild of Writers sprouts wings. The Maintainers are contingent on the Writers providing us with Ages.

Ok, we have a meeting scheduled for 7:00 pacific, 8:00 mountain, etc. tonight. It will be held in the Guild of Maintainers' Bevin and I hope you will all attend it so we can get some grip on this thing. Also, I would like to talk to someone from the Guild of Inspectors to get an idea of what there organization is going to do.

Can't make it, my friend. Too short notice.

That's why I suggested we let the dust settle on this episode, let D'net reorganize, and ask them to facilitate a Town Hall Meeting specifically for the Maintainers, then promote it for a week. That what we only have to do it once.

Right now most explorers haven't even decided what guild to support. Let's take the slow and measured approach, why don't we? What's the hurry? Right now everyone's attention is (and should be) on the Bahro and the DRC presence. Let's not pull people away from that -- there is plenty of time for explorer-only activities between episodes.

Good call! I had a problem late last night with Er'cana and getting off of the top part of the harvester/tram (never could, used the cloth near it to get around it). Maintainers could call on others from the group to check to see if it is an issue for them or an isolated issue (or just me being slow to turn and run, he he).

Well, I'm old and slow as well,l so here's MY workaround for an aging body. Razz
Once you've pulled the lever to send the unit on it's way back, simply walk backwards. No need to try and make the turn then. Very Happy

I'll be there. I'll log it, though I've never used any formatting or highlighting utilities. Maybe someone else would like to do that. As for "votes", I think anything voted on (if anything) is for temporary organizational purposes only just to try to get initial things going. Just thoughts and generalities until a bigger get-together and make sure all interested parties have time to be notified to participate. Bascially, my opinion is, let's gather all that are interested... Preliminary meeting is a good start but nothing big can be decided until the episode is over and everyone has had a chance to even hear about what is going on. Things are just coming out, this has just become a hot issue.. not all paying Cyan customers are here daily or in the last 24 hours.

Let's meet, but let's give time for others to have a chance to participate.

I simply want to participate in the early stages of a new group and meet new people to provide more interest to the game from a social aspect for myself (plus a daugther and some friends I talked into putting down their credit card numbers).

Though I played early Myst games, I didn't join/find this live thing until February. I'm not interested in being a leader or elected and remove myself from consideration. I will be happy to do grunt work or whatever but simply being allowed to participate will add another dimension to my Myst Online experience.
