My experience so far, in indy game development, is that there is an enormous variety of skills necessary to build a game (read that as AGE), and imagination and the ability to write well are not the least of them.

I'm sure you will be most welcome in such a venture, and if anybody is misguided enough to tell you otherwise.. just come see me.. and I'll tell you just how hard it is to get good writers! Laughing However, I'm sure you will very quickly 'find your place in it'.

Hey - hopefully, there'll even be a spot for my wildly eclectic set of skills and interests somewhere in the midst of it all Wink

Blender can import 3ds files.

Grogyan: I got this book for my summer job a little while ago. Hopefully, we'll be able to learn enough from it to be useful!

I was familiar with Blender since before it was opened by the Blender Foundation (that was a real community effort!). It is fantastic software, and is capable of nearly everything you would need in a 3D modeling suite. I focus mostly in mechanical/physical animations, so I'm not likely to be so useful for terraforming meshes.

But I would very much like to work on stuff that interacts and moves. Should one of the tech experts stop by, I am keenly interested in designing moving parts. I imagine this is a terribly difficult task, but I would welcome the challenge as well as the learning experience!

I've ran into a problem using this part of installing the PyPRP plugin.
I tried downloading a snapshop and extracting it into the folder but it says "Invalid Archive Directory" whenever i try to open or extract the file.

anyone know what to do? Confused

Installing the plugin
First download a snapshot of PyPRP (or simply grab the lastest snapshot). Now find Blender's "scripts" folder. For Windows 9x users, it should be found in C:\Program Files\Blender Foundation\Blender\.blender\scripts while In Windows NT and XP, it may be found in C:\Documents and Settings\Your User\Application Data\Blender Foundation\.blender\scripts. Once you have found the "scripts" folder, unzip the PyPRP snapshot (that you downloaded earlier) into the scripts folder. Start blender, view the User Preferences window. Click the File Paths button, beside the Python box, one of the buttons says 'Re-evaluate scripts registration in menus': Click it. This will cause the PyPRP options to appear in File->Import and File->Export. You are now ready to create your own Ages!

Did the file you downloaded have a .tar.bz extension or .zip? I just tried downloading a few of the snapshots and 7-zip tells me it can't open the .tar.bz files as an archive. However, the .zip version works fine. Confused

Yes, you need a blank book to start writing. In order to create that book, we need to follow a really complex system.

Creating a new blank book is as simple as:

Select the scripts window
Select the sub menu "Add" -> "PyPRP..." -> "Create a New Book"

step 1 went fine, but when i tried to create a new book i get this error message:

Quote:

Python Script error: check console

so i check the console and i see this:

Quote:

File "<string>", line 54, in <module>
ImportError: No module named alcconfig

Hm... that sounds like you're missing a file... you might check and make sure that all the files were extracted directly to the /scripts folder.

wierd Confused

after reading your post i looked at the scripts folder and found a folder that contained the stuff i extracted so i decided to try copying and pasting all the files from that folder into the scripts folder with all the other scripts (instead of being in a folder in the scripts folder Shocked ) and i think it worked. i think. so far so good.

Thanks again Herohtar.

im sure ill have more problems again soon Rolling Eyes (hopefully not)

You did unzip all of the files, right?

Did you unzip them to the /scripts/ folder, or to a subfolder? They must all be in the /scripts/ folder.

I unziped them into the scrips folder but for some reason it just put the contents into a subfolder, I figured it wasn't supposed to do that so i just copied and pasted them into the script folder and it worked.
